PHS Traffic Problems

Saw 2 difficult situations on PHS today: An ambulance with siren sounding turned left into PHS from URR and other vehicles had no way of making room for it.  In the bit of PHS closest to Norroy Rd, things were made worse because the pedestrian waiting area in the middle of PHS narrows the road, and other vehicles just couldn’t move out the way to let the ambulance through. I was walking on URR when the ambulance went by and I think the ambulance driver could not see the congestion on PHS when they turned into it.   Just a thought, but if the ambulance slowed down at the crossroads and tried to get a good view first, they could see if there is room to come down PHS on the other side of the road by the station.  I am not criticising just hopefully making a reasonable suggestion. Also crossing PHS at the traffic lights close to Sainsbury’s, a huge lorry was turning left from Chelverton Rd when the lights were indicating pedestrians could cross on PHS.  I felt sorry for the lorry driver really difficult for him.  A very long queue of traffic down Chelverton Rd, behind the lorry. Too many problems for pedestrians and drivers on PHS, I think.

The other week a huge articulated lorry jumped the lights at the other end of PHS heading south from the bridge.The problem being the distance between the red light on the bridge and the pedestrian crossing near the church is quite long. It may have just turned red on the bridge but the green man has already changed and people had almost already completed crossing.The lorry had a passenger so no excuse for eyes in the cab not to see the situation.But in 2025 the road sensors should have detected a vehicle was still traveling and delayed the green man signal.Every trip to PHS seems to result in witnessing a potential fatality!

Some modern vehicles are just too big for our small streets and need to make deliveries at different out of hour times.  I would have thought that PHS would have had these restrictions or there would be box junctions to create space.  It shows how important it is to not block routes when the road is busy.  We now usually use it at night!

Thanks Ivonne.  I also don’t like seeing ambulances struggling to get through traffic.  A few minutes can really count in an emergency.  Cars wanted to move out the way, but they couldn’t. re: the lorry, the cab was quite high up and the lorry itself was enormous.  I guess the lorry driver had been waiting for the right moment to turn into PHS.  It was quite a difficult manoeuvre for him. I think the traffic situation on PHS has got worse.  I go to PHS everyday and never used to take much notice of traffic problems, but now I feel I can’t avoid them.

Hello Martine,PHS is horrific and beyond terrible!  All the way through to the Bridge, it is really appalling and unforgivable the mess the Council has created!  Grrrr!!!Your example of the ambulance illustrates it perfectly!Your suggestion is very reasonable, but the driver was perhaps not too knowledgeable of PHS or, which is worse, needed to get somewhere along PHS.....  The thought really makes me shiver!
