PHS/Norroy Rd/Disraeli Rd Junction

The traffic on PHS is really bad, and I am finding it has made it harder to walk across PHS at this junction because traffic is stuck at a standstill on the road area in front of me.  Also if you have a lorry or bus stopped in the road in front of you, it makes it impossible to see the green man signal for pedestrians, so you have to make the judgement whether to cross by walking in between vehicles, something I am not keen on doing. I feel sorry for the vehicles trying to turn right into PHS from Disraeli Rd, as they often have to wait a while to do this because of the stationary traffic on PHS.  Things get a bit heated between the drivers in the queue. Just wondered if anyone else thought the same about this crossing on PHS?

I feel sorry for parents trying to cross PHS with prams, pushchairs and young children.  Its bad enough looking out for yourself, without having to keep babies and children safe too.

Martine, I only venture across when the green light is showing  though I know that doesn't deter cyclists. I don't dare dodge between stationery traffic.PHS won't improve until Hammersmith Bridge is sorted, and that won't happen.

Because the traffic is at a stand still for so long people chance crossing.I've seen quite a few instances of a gap opening up and vehicles accelerating quickly to fill it before the lights change or as mention a bike out of view.I'm really surprised there has not been more serious accidents on PHS. It's like the Wild West!I think PHS traffic will remain a nightmare until they sort out Putney Bridge - which only has one lane going North.

Elizabeth, the problem with that crossing and bikes, is often the traffic is stationary on the section of road where pedestrians need to cross, drivers hesitant of being caught out on the yellow box.  So if you are making your way through the stationary vehicles, not sure if the pedestrian lights are showing red or green, you also have to look out for any bikes that may not have stopped. I am surprised there hasn’t been an accident there.

Yes, the bikes terrify me. Cars, buses and lorries do stop for pedestrian crossings. Bikes hurtled straight through.

I agree with your post, Ivonne.  Can’t say I like crossing PHS on any of the crossings.  I feel that I am checking several times before I step out, but it’s the bikes that make everything worse for pedestrians. When I am in the West End, eg Tottenham Court Rd, the roads are empty.

Thank you, Martine.It can get extremely unpleasant when waiting to turn right, either from Disraeli Road and let us not forget Werter Road. The queues of traffic on either road can be enormous at times!All the changes made by Putney Bridge are an unmitigated disaster.  All under the pretext that they are trying to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists.  I think only the latter have benefitted just because they keep going regardless.  Not good.

Thanks Ivonne. I had forgotten the cyclists that don’t stop, that you have to look out for as you try to walk between the stationary vehicles on PHS, because you aren’t sure if it’s the pedestrians turn to cross because you can’t see the green man light, as there’s a large vehicle blocking it out!  It’s just awful!  Yes, I agree, it’s dangerous. As for the right turn into PHS from Disraeli Rd, I’ve seen drivers waiting for at least 4 light changes, as you say. The driver at the start of the queue can’t make the manoeuvre because they could get stuck on the yellow box, so the drivers behind them get really angry, shouting and sounding their horn.  Gets a bit unpleasant sometimes.

Hello Martine,PHS is a total and utter nightmare, from one end to the other, be you a pedestrian or a driver.  Cyclists are not particularly bothered as they just keep going.The PHS/Norroy Rd/Disraeli Rd Junction is just horrific.  As you say, if you want to turn right from Disraeli Road it can take more than 4 traffic light changes.....  And if you want to cross the road, it is equally frustrating and perhaps I should add dangerous.
