Crucifix, About 1325-30, Attributed to Tondino ii Guerrino (National Gallery Siena exhibition) https://flic.kr/p/2rcyaGEThe varied colours of translucent enamel decoration on this cross create an extraordinarily vibrant effect. We can enjoy this impression of the original condition thanks to later repairs. The pelican-a bird believed to feed its young with blood from its own breast symbolises Christ's sacrifice. This may have been made both as an altar cross and to be carried on pole in processions when it would be seen in the round. The cast and enamelled parts were likely produced by two different artists or groups of artists.
