Sainsbury's Werter Rd.

Just got in, while I was sitting on a seat looking at my receipt a young Indian young man and looked like his grandfather, both had a large bottle of Whisky in their hand, the Security guard managed to get the older man and take the bottle from him. But the younger one escaped with the bottle. The Security Guard let the older man go, he was old. But what is the world coming to.

If your cousin's brother-in-law was sacked in the circumstances you describe he would have grounds for wrongful dismissal. Shoplifting in supermarkets in this country is almost exclusively carried out by people with addiction issues. The yield from this type of crime is very low but the risk of being caught is high. It is obviously wrong and extremely frustrating (for the police as much as anyone) that persistent offenders reappear soon after being arrested. However, our jails are already full so if you have a solution to the problem, the authorities would probably love to hear from you.

I agree that it’s shameful. One might have some sympathy for a poor mother or pensioner taking a bottle of milk but not for people stealing bottles of whisky.

John it is all disgusting. As I put on a previous post, my cousins brother in law got dismissed in Bournemouth for attempting to stop a 15yr old who had a mask on and a knife in his pocket, who was attempting to attack an elderly man. They said he kept pointing his finger and swore at the young lad, It's been in Daily Mail the Sun, 46 yr old Lorne Castle married with 3 girls and teaches with his wife Denise kick boxing for girls in Bournemouth. Also an interview with Nigel Farage.

Giving rise to this problem probably includes a lack of visible policing (little chance of being caught) and very weak sentencing (so if even if caught little if any punishment). Some sentencing decisions recently have been staggering. It seems social media posts are more likely to result in prison time than violent crime. Even if in the case mentioned in this thread the offender had whacked the security guard with the bottle they would probably have had a suspended sentence. A person watching, drawing an inference and posting about it would probably be straight off to Belmarsh.

Lucille, it was also the tall Security Guard, the friendly one. He took the bottle of Whisky from the elderly gentleman, also trying to grab the arm of the younger one, who ran.

Exactly, Barbara. Thieves don't need to go through self check out. They know they can just walk in, help themselves and leave with impunity

They didn't go through the self service, they just tried to walk out of the shop where you walk in, so they set of the alarm, twerps.

If the shoplifting epidemic is not contained, the logical outcome for the big names is fundamental changes to their business models, that is, small shops will close as they become uneconomic and larger shops will change to Argos style shops where customers order on PC screens and then queue to pay and receive their shopping.

It wouldn't have been so easy to take it and get away with it in an old design off-licence.  The self-service design can be too much of a temptation for many people.

I use the smart shop app in Werter Road.They now seem to flag very frequently for shopping checks making it almost useless.I don't mind if the staff are polite but they haven't been on several occasions, leading me to make a formal complaint.One rude Sainsbury's staff, seemed to want to peer in my rucksack at my Waitrose shopping (the staff on self checkout in Waitrose are polite I should add).You can just imagine that as far as head office are concerned they probably do not differentiate from losses via self checkout etc and those that just walk out the door.As they say manners cost nothing but bad manners cost custom.One way or another we all end up paying for the increase in theft.The UK government local & national by following mad US Democrat policies of not taking every theft seriously and have effectively decriminalised thefts below a certain value has meant that crime has not only increased but they are actively encouraging young people to take up crime!It will not end well!

It is absolutely ridiculous!  There is no deterrent whatsoever with shoplifing.We were in Waitrose in Wimbledon a few months ago and three young chaps were running towards the door, each carrying bottles of whisky.  Off they went, unchallenged.  There is a Waitrose local near our house.  In one morning, they lost £9,000 - not on alcohol but food.  I suppose security staff are instructed not to intervene in case of stabbings.Shameful does not even describe it!
