Save the newly planted street trees please!
My street has been graced with five lovely new juvenile cherry trees to replace those considered a danger. How lovely.Except that we have had very little rain and yesterday I noticed one beginning to droop plus have been planted with the soil built up against them so any small rainfall will run off.I have created a well around the three nearest to me so water can be poured in and given a chance to soak. The contractors employed by Wandsworth to plant healthy and expensive new trees simply plant and leave. Did we know it was up to us to care for them in their infancy? Even the ridiculous “gator” bags which required forensic attention to even work out that you had to lift a flap and fill the sack not just pour water down inside them (don’t get me started on the fact that some of them had no drainage holes and would appear constantly full) are no longer being used.Four out of seven new birch trees by Beverley Brook in Leaders Gardens died last year and the Queens Jubilee 7 only survived because residents began watering. So apart from a gigantic waste of our money it is simply quite tragic.
