British Library, Shakespeare First Folio https://flic.kr/p/2pJyderShakespeare's First Folio, London, 1623: a folio is a large volume produced by folding each sheet of paper once to create two leaves. The name derives from the Latin for 'Ieaf. The 36 plays printed in Shakespeare's First Folio were brought together by John Heminges and Henry Condell, both of whom had acted alongside the playwright. The text was printed in the workshop of Willilam and Isaac Jaggard. The portrait, however, is by Martin Droeshout, who engraved it into a copper plate that was re-used in later editions. Of the estimated 750 First Folios produced only around 235 survive today. Five are at the British Library.[From the BL label]
