Lucy Letby
I am surprised that there has been no comment on the Forum about the case if Lucy Letbt now that a panel if international experts has unanimously concluded that none of the babies were murdered and that all the deaths should be attributed to poor care in the hospital. The most telling comment was that of the chaurman, Dr Lee, who said that in Canada a hospital with so many neo-natal deaths would have been closed down. If the panel are right, the Letby case represents one of the worst miscarriages of justice in recent years. Lessons (to use one of the 'hateful phrases' on another thread) will need to be learned. One is the danger of relying on the opinion of a single hand-picked expert (who it seems had been retired for 15 years at the time of the trial). Another is the danger of relying on evidence against Lucy Letby gathered by doctors and nurses at the hospital who may themselves have been at fault. A third is the danger of conclusions reached by amateur mathematicians on statistical evidence.
