Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519); Cats, lions and a dragon, c.1517-18. (Black chalk, pen and ink, wash). Drawing at the Italian Renaissance exhibition, the King's Gallery. https://flic.kr/p/2qvXe3zThe studies range from closely observed drawings of domestic cats, through recollections of cats fighting and caged lions, to a sketch of a coiling dragon. Leonardo had considered writing a treatise on the movement of animals, and at the bottom of the sheet he comments 'the lion is prince of this animal species because of the flexibility of its spine'.
