Sadly the new gaming site on the High St was approved this evening

Despite Cllr Ethan Brookes best efforts, and all the objections, it was passed by a vote of 5:4 with one, maybe two abstentions. So we just have to hope no one uses it, and it closes!! They said according to Planning regulations they had to pass it........Don't think everyone was happy about it though.

Michael,You do not have to be a limited company to run a business and nor should you.Only limited companies will be on the Companies House website and even then accounts are done in arrears.Even VAT which again you do not need to be a limited company is paid quarterly in arrears.The types of high street businesses that you refer to may or may not be incorporated.There is always a balance between bureaucracy and hampering business. But even legitimate businesses can go bust owing taxes, rent, wages and suppliers. He gets it from Reform party propaganda that says there are a number of businesses on every high street (mainly barbers I think) which pay no tax and are a front for criminal enterprises. I would assume you could use the companies house website to see if they do actually pay tax but perhaps Mr Farage can't be bothered.That said, might be completely true!

I don't know where you get that they distribute all these things!! It's quite a strict business, and if they did distribute any of these things, they'd lose their licence quick smart! And I don't know what kind of hair dresser you frequent!

Wikipedia:BT had the contract to provide and maintain the satellite services to the betting shops. I worked on developing the BT fault reporting system, still mainframe in those days.Multiple live sporting events and data from just a radio was a big thing back then. It was a turning point away from the government discouraging gambling.

The 1994 Act also removed the requirement that they couldnt have adverts in the windows and the windows did not have to be obscure etc.1994 is a little bit of a stretch to blame long Thatcher.

The big deregulation was the 1994 Act which allowed gambling machines on shops. These machines have become the major source of income via the shops. Betting per se has largely gone on line rather than via the shops.

Long Thatcher again I'm afraid!Gambling was on the decline with mainly old men popping into betting shops.Rules were so strict to deter gambling with seats & carpets not even being allowed.Thatcher deregulated gambling and it has boomed since.

I am appalled at this decision but i really would query your assertion about ‘hairdressers’. What evidence do you have that they are part of ‘our local criminal enterprises’. The ones I know or know of are nothing of the sort. They are local businesses contributing to the local economy.

It will be another great place for distributing illegal cigarettes, vapes, alcohol, stolen goods, etc, all tax-free, just in case there isn't a 'hairdresser' nearby performing the same useful social function already.. time to celebrate all our local criminal enterprises.

That is certainly NOT good news...I cannot understand the Planning Committee. Regardless of planning regulations, has common sense ceased to exist?
