Dugard Butchers

They haven't opened yet, but they want butchers, jobs going in the shop info on the front window. Putney High Street.

Picked up some diced venison there today.I've been looking for some for a few months, Waitrose used to sell in Putney but no longer.Haven't had it yet but it looks nice and not too dear :)

From what I remember of the days when everyone went to the butchers for meat what was really good was being able to ask and discuss exactly what meat you wanted for a recipe and have it cut the way and to the weight/size that you wanted.  We only eat meat very occasionally now as we increased the importance and variety of vegetables and eat other protein.

Went in today, and was pretty impressed with the range of things other than meat. Lots of sauces, interesting herbs and spices, cheeses, ice cream, pasta etc. Staff very friendly and helpful. Certainly worth a look, and nice to have a family run business on the High St. Hope they get lots of support

One of the staff in Sainsbury's said sausages were £9 and I saw a round loaf in the front window for £6. Wonder if the same loaf is sitting there since Monday.

I respect vegans but  Ixer's posts about non-meat remind me of the jibe: You don't need to ask if a person is vegan - they'll tell you in the next 2 minutes.

Personally, I prefer a nice single malt - Laphroaig or Talisker - with my vegan haggis, and some brussel sprouts with my tatties and neeps to stay healthy; roll on Burns night 🙂 Each to their own ...

I'm vegetarian but went into Dugards to check.  NO smell. Meat under glass.  if squeamish you have to be careful where you look - but there are plenty of foods for vegetarians and vegans.  Vegetables, lovely looking bread, An entire wall (its a large shop) of jars and bottles of sauces, marinades etc.  Best selection of small savoury biscuits Ive ever seen - some to have with cheese, some you could eat with a drink instead of crisps.  Lots of speciality cheeses.  Frozen counter with veg, chips, and a vegetarian risotto which I think I'll go back for.  Talked to one of the staff who said they do have lots of vegetarian customers in their Earlsfield store.Well worth a look.

Sounds good to me.However we are lucky in Southfields as we have The Village Butchers, personally endorsed by Gordon Ramsey.For those that like game they are now stocked with pheasant and in August could provide grouse on order.

'Of course, who knows if those shrink wrapped cheap steaks in cut-price supermarkets are really beef or some diseased, old horse reintroduced from the knackers yard into to the food chain by criminals'.Indeed; who knows."I think we should be told".I hope this warning has been passed to Sainsburys, Tesco, M&S, Waitrose, Morrisons, Aldi and Lidl.And I have always been a bit dubious of what I have seen being taken into the Halal butcher opposite the Park Tavern.BTW does this new butcher sell Haggis, that wonderful British delicacy I am looking forward to eating on Saturday washed down by a large Johnnie Walker Black Label ?Accompanied of course by a goodly helping of veg - tatties and neeps but NO greens.

Interesting watching this thread from a vegan perspective. Perhaps it's good that people see the reality of meat: dead slabs of animals hanging around rather than the antiseptic, plastic wrapped innocuous packets in super markets?Of course, who knows if those shrink wrapped cheap steaks in cut-price supermarkets are really beef or some diseased, old horse reintroduced from the knackers yard into to the food chain by criminals. I guess at least the new butchers is selling quality products and the farmers producing it are hopefully getting a reasonable return? Perhaps you get what you pay for? So better to have the independent shop than an empty one in the high street rather than a supermarket expanding its meat counter and dictating too lower prices to farmers; though a greengrocer would be preferable for health and better for the environment?Of course, with all that dead flesh hanging around I doubt many veggies or vegans will enter, and I suspect a number of meat eaters will be deterred, particularly younger ones who've never seen a butchers before? Perhaps a few more veggie converts?

David, after a came from doctors yesterday after having a blood test. Then walking down the road and my back hurt, I was in the shop rather quick and out again to get home. I couldn't even be bothered to walk to the end of the shop. Have a look for yourself.

Michael, no sawdust on the floor like when I was young, didn't like the smell would stand outside in Sheen till my mum came out. I felt a bit overwhelmed in Dugards. Too much meat and too large shop.

I too remember the smell.  As a child I wasn't allowed to be a vegetarian, but I was allowed to wait outside the butchers, with my back to the window! I still applaud the arrival of a new independent  shop in Putney High Street though.

Morning Ed, yes years ago I always used a proper butchers for pork chops with a kidney as well, or chicken, beef, etc. but I found this a little bit much. A lovely round lump of beef, but it was massive, OK for feeding a family of ten.

Yes I should have probably mentioned it when I peered through the window on Sunday.It's a traditional butchers with large amounts of meat hanging up. Something most people are not used to these days and may find upsetting.I have to pop in and see what's on offer and how they compare.

Very sorry, but a lot of people will probably love this Butchers, but the more I think about all that meat, made me feel rather ill.

Yes, has opened. Very expensive. Massive lumps of meat, wouldn't pay their prices. Not much else in there 4 Mince pies 5.99. Another lady said she's going to Sainsbury's. I asked politely to a man on the meat counter do they have any leaflets what they sell, I can put on our local forum. He rudely said look on line, in other words F Off.

Sign says they will open tomorrow 9:30 I think.Looks extremely impressive.As mentioned by others there are lots of shelves with non meat products.
