Tibbets Corner

Anybody know what has happened, went to Asda, Police in middle of the road by Tibbets Corner underpass. Also a vehicle stopping anybody driving down West Hill. About 2.30 today.

I am not trying to prove that a bicycle was not involved. In fact, to start with, I believed that the victim was a cyclist. Then the Met and the LAS said that the victim was a pedestrian, which was a surprise. (And made me doubt the anonymous policeman's report). Most recently I heard that there is more than one witness to him being a cyclist, on the NextDoor site. I was trying to find out the facts from the confusion. And that is showing respect.

Yes, and I thanked you for the original post as it meant I could avoid buses near there. As Sue put it somewhere the thread went "pips-up". Just very sad someone lost their life.

@Michael 14.07Michael. The MSM has little bearing on this. The thread started quite innocently by Barbara alerting us about extremely heavy traffic locally, and speculation started about the cause, the usual stuff. I had no idea myself but a little later I received a feed from NextDoor about the issue; several people had posted about a serious accident around West Hill and Lytton Grove which involved a lorry and a seriously injured person underneath the vehicle. I copied and posted a comment from a woman who apparently saw the accident and had spoken to a police officer about it. Maybe she was giving a witness statement or maybe just having a chat, I don't know and neither do you, so why question it? Anyway from that point on the thread went pips-up and what started out as a benign post of local interest soon evolved into a bloody interrogation by DA who cannot let a topic go without trying to have the last word. FGS David stop trying to prove that a bicycle or an e-scooter wasn't involved, let it go, the poor young man lost his life regardless, so please show some respect.  And shut up!

The person who posted the news about the accident on Nextdoor is not the person who lives next to where the accident happened and posted greater detail about it.Between you and me, I very much doubt we will ever know the official and exact circumstances of the accident; at least, not in the immediate future.From memory, and I may be wrong, all the reports of the accident are not based on the Met's information.

Meaning that there are local witnesses who say that he was a cyclist, and the Metropolitan Police and the London Ambulance Service have said that he was a pedestrian. This appears to have been stated more than a day ago and the Met has not corrected it. Somebody must have contacted them about this. And, of course, there was the policeman who spoke to the person who sent in the first NextDoor account. The Met surely have had time to correct their statement, or qualify it.

Hello David,I also saw it on Nextdoor.  The lady posting seems incredibly coherent, sensible and educated.This lady lives exactly by the accident location.  She was not the person to post the news but she amplified it. Please feel free to look it up and you could search the post by looking for "Tragic accident on West Hill".While I agree that Nextdoor is social media, as is this forum by the way, a lot of local news are received that way.

I think this thread is beginning to highlight the worst in social media. I'm happy to take the rough and tumble of discussing politics and associated issues such as climate and vaccines, etc (even if some reduce them to personal comments or I get exasperated!) when I've got spare time, which I haven't had recently - interrailing around Europe, entertaining a friend visiting from the US and spending time at the theatre, exhibition, concerts, etc ... However, we have one main fact here: a young man has lost his life in a tragic accident, the news item on the front seems to contain most of the salient facts - time, location, the driver wasn't arrested, and some reports of circumstances. Perhaps it would be best just to let those invoved in the traumatic experience - driver, witnesses, police, family of the deceased - recover as far as possible in peace while the investigators assess the circumstances and witnesses' statements and draw a conclusion rather than speculate?

I am surprised at all these reports.  It is difficult to reconcile this with the witness statements.A bicycle was recovered from under the lorry completely destroyed.  Of course, it could have been one of the wretched hire bicycles abandoned carelessly.There are lots of cameras in that area so I suppose some footage will/may be recovered.It was noteworthy that the lorry driver was not arrested which leads me to believe that there were no solid grounds on which to do so.Many times media report on events and the information on these is provided by members of the public.  Whatever our thoughts, it was, above all, a truly tragic accident. No negligence has so far been proven.

What are you droning on about now? An eye witness at the scene posted that the the young man was riding a cycle of some kind. The photo on the homepage shows somebody riding something completely different so there is obviously a discrepancy and one account must be wrong. Stop having a dig at Barbara even though you are determined to have the last word.  It's a pathetic attempt at forum bullying.

Which 'unnecessary additional comments' are you referring to? There aren't any in this thread, which is surprising because cyclists habitually speeding is an ongoing problem that has often been mentioned in the past. The update which I copied from NextDoor was posted by a woman who was in situ when the accident happened, and perhaps she was speaking to the policeman as a witness? Go to the ND website and judge for yourself. You are overly sensitive and ultra-critical about her comments because you have admitted to being a reckless cyclist yourself.

"Not often  David, but I agree wholeheartedly with you."Thanks. Law of averages, it has to happen some time. My cyclist bias (and experience) sensitized me a bit to this one. As someone who has done foolhardy things on a bike, I know that I can have accidents and hit vehicles. I also have been (and seen other cyclists) overtaken dangerously by vehicles (some left-turning), and forced into the pavement edge and to a sudden stop. Once I was overtaken and sideswiped (on purpose) by a van.I guess what got me most were the unnecessary additional comments regarding excessive speed and also mobile phone use amongst younger cyclists, which is up to the investigator of this particular case.

I have read Sue's post again and my view is not changed. The officer should not be discussing this with a random member of the public until a proper investigation has been completed.If for no other reason than in fairness to the cyclists family who  at that time, .may not have been aware of the death.

It wasn't a stabbing, which should have been kept quiet, till they found out who did it.  Loads of other people already in their cars or walking would have seen what happened. Also the cyclist being taken away in an Ambulance. Somebody must have been also comforting the van driver, who obviously was very upset. This happened Lunch time, not late at night when nobody was around.

Also David, the underpass was cut off and Westhill, so obviously something serious had happened, anybody walking down the road at the time could have seen the accident, also called the Police.

Well, I think the Police Officer did the right thing, at least it was seen by somebody the accident, so the lorry driver wasn't to blame.

This account from a police officer of a fatal road accident, given to a random member of the public and appearing on social media, seems rather unprofessional and premature. Will they talk that way today to the cyclist's family?
