It's nothing to do with the right of motorists nor is it "Right Wing" either before you try that one.Just sticking 20mph signs and trawling out doggy TFL stats is evading the whole discussion on road safely. In Putney not Europe - we have a camera car that has been sitting with someone in it for over a year at a huge cost.Meanwhile behind them cars are double parked and performing all sorts of dangerous manoeuvres with impunity it seems from even getting a parking ticket.Someone did suggest it was local corruption regarding parking enforcement but it certainly isn't good us of public funds to have 100K spent on the no left turn whilst ignoring the greater danger behind. Now if you were proposing to have some of the enforcement that they use in Europe that may be different. But you do not want that do you?At least in Gibraltar they finally seem to be tackling the problem.Oddly enough it was this crossing - you could look out the window and see so many near misses every day. Very safe place apart from crossing the road - just a quick google illustrates lawa are only laws if they are enforced!24 July 2020https://www.police.gi/news/local-man-banned-for-dangerous-driving-792Possibly the same crossing10 May 2024https://www.gbc.gi/news/driver-jailed-nine-weeks-after-knocking-over-pedestrian-zebra-crossing15 Feb, 2023https://www.theolivepress.es/spain-news/2023/02/15/elderly-pensioner-on-moped-smashes-into-pram-at-gibraltar-zebra-crossing-gets-month-long-driving-ban/June 2022https://www.police.gi/news/local-man-jailed-for-driving-offences-12883rd July 2015,https://www.gbc.gi/news/traffic-accident-line-wall-road-pedestrian-injured-2996116th December 2003https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?p=1&f=23&t=72094&h=0&hw=curry+popadom

Besides 20mph being over 32kph there are quite a few differences with European cities.Enforcement is taken very seriously in some for example so yes the outcomed may be different. Also making as stated above A roads and residential roads the same speed may actually increase accidents.Yesterday a car travelling around 50mph overtook two cars doing 20mph on the URR. Unlikely that this could have been accomplished if it the cars were travelling at 30mph. But it's also highlights the idea that sticking a sign up makes it a 20mph.Buses have also been one of the main abusers of the so called 20mph limit. Of course two wheels seem to be completely exempt. There was no cost benefit study done before the 20mph wide implementation. The money may have been better spent on improving junctions and pedestrian crossings.TFL roads are one of the most shocking when it comes to poor junctions and crossings. The URR Roehampton Lane crossing are abysmal with no account taken that the Hammersmith Bridge has been closed for years. Teaching a kid how to navigate that is almost impossible as TFL have not even bothered to put pedestrian lights up.There seems to be a high number of deaths this year concerning buses. Although speed is always mentioned, some people still have grasped the concept of gravity  with people ending up under a bus at junctions that was probably doing less than 20mph.The economic impact on buses routes hasn't even been costed. Buses run from early morning till gone midnight. A large part of this time the roads are empty. It is going to cost more to run the same service as before. This will probably mean less buses. Expect to see reductions in frequency.
