New Quiet Cycle Routes As detailed on the Front PAge

Any thoughts on the new routes?One of them goes through the alley way at Granard.I do not recall it being wide enough for cyclists & pedestrians.Are they going to widen it?It also goes through Froebel & the hospital (past the diesel generators - are they still there??) and out to Crestway.Have they extended the Hospital gate opening times?I believe the Froebel times are limited too. Right turning on Roehampton Lane in both directions can be a bit hairy IMO.Another goes down Gwendolen Ave. then turns right onto URR.Currently that is a no right turn Mon-Fri 7am-??.It continues to Charwood Road (very busy with pedestrians during school opening/closing) with people, prams etc tying to pass the barrier.It eventually ends in the river - seems a bit odd perhaps someone has been watching too much of the Paris Olympics.They have another along Putney Park Lane from Putney Heath to Granard but not the whole length. Perhaps they have improved it but I do not recall the surface being particular good for cycling.Why not do the who length of Putney Park Lane?I guess they do not want people racing down - a few do even with the bad surface.Put some cycling traffic lights and link up with Gipsy Lane - make Queen's Ride a give way to Gipsy Lane.https://wandsworthquietroutes.commonplace.is/

That makes sense Lisa.Probably better to improve junctions and existing "main" roads, I guess it's in the name. People's last mile may be different even if they live on the same road. Routes too can be subjective when it comes to risk.Last year, I was sure I was targeted a couple of times in the evening on some quiet roads Richmond/Sheen so I actually prefer busier roads at night time in some areasOn the other hand you do not want to get used to a local route only to come back and find the gate is locked and have to make an unfamiliar detour.I think we have created an issue for side roads now by making main roads the same speed. This will not be corrected by these few quiet routes schemes when and if they get brought in.

I don’t really see the point. I have my own quiet route for where I need to go. It is far better than their proposed version of my route. What I really want is segregated lanes on busy routes, so cyclists can safely travel on the most direct route instead of going ‘round the houses to feel safer.

Andrew perhaps you missed my points above, just to summarise.Access on the parts that go through private land is an issue for the Clarence Lane  to Granard route. Also the alley way at Granary was no cycling and quite narrow last time I checked.With another route the surface on Putney park Lane is not very suitable, not to mention there will be complaints from dog walkers if it was made smoother.Dover Park Drive, which is quite wide could be made one-way with half the road for cyclists.Then there is the no right turn on to URR which is on a bend and the junctions on Roehampton Lane are quite hazardous when turning right.But yes the roads already exist.

I'd have thought that there would be local cycling enthusiasts investigating the proposed routes.The summer holidays is a good time to have a look at the cycling facilities offered by Councils including the lessons available to families as well as individuals, bike maintenance and courses etc.https://www.wandsworth.gov.uk/cycle-hire#trybeforeyoubike
