One point worth noting is that those arrested and being given criminal convictions will find their travel options severely limited. They'll likely be banned from travelling using the US ESTA Visa Waiver scheme and when it's introduced - probably sometime in 2025 - they be ineligible for the EU ETIAS Visa waiver scheme.

@IvonneI agree the comparative sentences are totally out of proportion because the thug who punched the police officer should have been sentenced to 10 years; in my opinion this should be the minimum mandatory sentence for anyone who physically attacks a PO.  I think the JSO sentences may seem harsh (not to me) is because their actions have caused major disruptions since 2022 and nobody had been adequately punished. Even after arrests JSO have repeatedly stated the demonstrations will continue and this overt defiance probably enhanced the length of the sentences to the maximum allowed.

I don't know whether it was the prison sentences or the massive turnouts by anti-racists or some combination of the two, but I'm sure everyone was delighted to see that there was no sign of the planned riots in 100 separate places tonight.As an aside, some sense of the intellectual capabilities of the far right mob is shown in this post by the St George March for England - its of a "mosque" in Brighton that they were evidently planning to target 😀 😀 😀 .

Agree, Ed, there's been plenty of time for several governments to correct the badly drafted law introduced by Blunkett. As I understand it was an unintended consequence, not intentional inmost cases?

The JSO sentences were excessive but a custodial sentence was warranted to deter others.The JSO were also repeat offenders possibly addicts and were disrespectful to the judge & court.At least the jailed JSO proteser will now have a lower carbon footprint during their stay.Harsh sentences will be handed out because it is a riot and then some police officer or innocent member of the public will get assorted again and it will go back to usual soft sentencing for violent crime.

I agree, Sue.  It surprised me how lenient they were, particularly with the man who attacked a police officer.If you would not mind, I think these sentences are ridiculous compared to those that the JSO people got.  For the latter, however much I disagree with blocking roads, they never attacked a police officer, they did throw paint at buildings but never threw bricks or pieces of metal, they never caused a fire in a building nor destruction of shops.
