Hello :)I'm not sure of the effect it has on people's actions to be honest. I imagine that one of the bigger reasons for the number of collections is the heat, they have lockable lids but you still wouldnt want them sitting outside for too long...I would imagine you'd be drowning in cockroaches!Certainly home cooking from scratch is still the norm here. We have never been round a Spanish friends house and had a takeway or pre-made food. It's always made from scratch and they absolutely put us to shame. If we eat out then really there aren't amazing choices for me - but it's fine. If we go into the city then there's no shortage of vegan and/or veggie restaurants. Hopefully it will improve where we live, sometimes I feel like I live on potatoes and mushrooms in restaurants.Fish is definately a large part of cooking, as is meat - i find myself apologising for my vegan/veggie "disabilities" pretty often! You can pretty much recycle everything you need to here and there's some good incentives. If you take something to the equivalent of Wandsworth tip that is recyclable but you can't put into a container. For example electrical devices then you get a discount on your council tax.And before anyone asks, we don't have a car. Using public transport here is insanely cheap. We can go from our house (20km outside Valencia city) all the way to the beach and back for less than 1 euro on the metro. If you are under 30 or over 65 - all public transport is free.Spain isn't perfect but it certainly seems to run a lot better than the UK.

Barbara.  I have given the link to the Government website which is there on the world wide web for the whole wide world to see what laws have been passed.    The food waste collection is part of your Council household waste collection and just brings Wandsworth in line with other Councils.  IF - and I reiterate IF - you are lucky enough to have been OFFERED a Council food waste collection and want to make the most of what you pay for your Council Tax then it just makes sense to make the most of it by actually using it.    It means that instead of a large dripping smelly rubbish bag attracting vermin you just have a much smaller one with a lockable lid - which reduces any smell and reduces the attraction to vermin. It is a WEEKLY collection so I don't know what you are making a fuss about.  When your rubbish is uncollected don't you file a report - like everyone else?No-one is making you do it.  It just makes sense.  And many people who are not eligible for this collection are asking for it.When you separate your food waste it makes it much easier to SEE EXACTLY what food waste you have made that week and from that you can make decisions and adjustments to what you buy and how you store and use that food. This country wastes tonnes of not just food but the resources and energy that are used to grow and make it.  It's also a great way to save money. The website www.lovefoodhatewaste.com is very useful as are many other websites including supermarket ones.I prefer the Scottish lovefoodhatewaste as I think they are more canny but in fact I think that the Welsh have the best recycling rates overall.

@LynI disagree.  I moved here (East Putney) in 1973 so I know it was not "ever thus". Our road had a brilliant crew for years and this wasn't ever an issue.  However it was a much simpler routine before WBC amalgamated with Richmond Council; one lorry and a couple of guys picking up the rubbish (black) bags, plus the recycling, and chucking them into (I presume) separate sections of just one lorry. Our rubbish collections were very regular, crews were respectful of property and polite and helpful. On the very rare occasion a bag of rubbish was left behind by mistake and I reported it either by phone or online, it was collected within 48 hours. Perfect service! (If it ain't broke why try to fix it?!) However this year the Council in its wisdom🙄introduced waste food bins in July which necessitated a new collection regime; rubbish (black bags) collected at approximately 6.30 am, recycling bags about 10ish and the waste food with yet another collection around 11ish. So, 3 separate collections by presumably 3 different lorries and possibly 3 different crews? No wonder things are going pips-up!From reading comments on various forums it is clear that many residents really dislike the food waste bins. Some have even reported that bags of rotting food were not being collected despite them having been taken out of the bin and left out as instructed on the Council blurb that came with the hideous bin. So this new WBC waste management rubbish collection regime:PROS ~ None. In my opinion. CONS1) takes far longer 2) has more collections, staggered 3) resulting in more lorries emitting more CO₂4) potentially evironmentally damaging (unless they are electric).
