If Holidaying in Devon

Be careful, as been coming up non stop on my FBook, regarding drinking water in Devon. If your going on holiday, boil your water, they are even handing bottles out for free. Stomach problems, even schools shutting. All around Brixham, Paignton, etc. Loads of people have become ill.

Even if some agricultural pollution got into a reservoir in Devon, I’d have thought the failure was at the water treatment plant for not dealing with it. Proper filtration should deal with the parasite that’s causing the trouble.

"The E.U. kept our privateering in check where they could"I've often heard this as a remain argument.It is true they imposed some minimal standards but underinvestment has been going on since privatisation.But what this really means is that the UK's government and institutions are not fit for purpose and whilst being in the EU no real reform took place. In fact quite the opposite -  being in the EU provided cover.Of course it is a bit more complex because the EU is a big driver for privatising industries.At the end of the day we have the odd situation where we swim in s&!t and still claim to have the best democracy in the world! Unfortunately one is fact and the other fiction.No doubt someone will point to the US as an argument against reform and sadly they are the real problem. They may make silly minor points but their main objective is to keep things exactly how they are.

I went down to a nice cafe along the coast from Worthing on Wednesday. Unfortunately the sea really stank. As it did in the centre of Worthing. Easy to blame exceptional rainfall but the failing water industry is yet another example of the U.K's private enterprise culture, where bonuses are paid to top execs and shareholders, yet not enough investment is made in improving infrastructure. The E.U. kept our privateering in check where they could. My mum always advised me to be careful about drinking water on trips to France and Spain. Ironic that.

They had the Pirate Festival in Brixham a couple of weeks ago.Even after people have returned home, they started getting ill. It's only in the last few days the Water Board have started doing anything, but it's been going on longer. People didn't realize why they were ill.

Didnt it rain heavy yesterday, bloody brexit !!In all seriousness the contamination of the water seems to have come from infected cattle dung getting into the water system, presumably due to run off. Not sure if their european cows

Hello Barbara,Yes, shockingly, drinking water is affected.  But it is also true that sewage is being discharged to the sea affecting the coast of England, particularly the south.It irks me no end and Thames Water, well, I cannot possibly include my true feelings towards them.  Horrific!!!

Bill, it's the drinking water that is the problem, they are handing out bottled water. You have to boil the water also and let it cool even when washing your hands. Also can catch in the swimming pools if you get water in your mouth.  It's making residents really ill takes a few days to show, then they can be ill for about 3 weeks, stomach problems and sickness. Loads have become ill.

I wonder whether the people of the Torquay region regret voting 63% Leave in the Brexit referendum? The E.U.  over 50 years made us clean up our beaches, but subsequent U.K. Governments appear not to give a crab. Still, I expect that the water company executives spend their bonuses on beach holidays in the Med.
