Blundering Susan Hall Mk. II

In the hope that consideration of Hall won't again get drowned in the endless, interminable, circular arguments about Gaza, I want to draw attention to her misleading statements about crime in London."Crime has spiralled out of control after he shut police stations and failed to recruit police," Hall claimed at her campaign launch (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-68639277.amp).Wrong: when he took over in 2016/17 the crime rate (the Met + City of London Police) was 89.3 per 1,000 population; in 2022/23 (the latest available figures) it was 100.9 (https://www.statista.com/statistics/380963/london-crime-rate/). so the increase was 13.2% over 7 years; hardly spiralling out of control.And the Conservative campaign has been forced to delete an ugly attack video that made another false claim about crime in London: “London under Labour has become a crime capital of the world.” Further, it showed scenes of panic at a railway station, overlaid with an ominous US-accented (why a US-accented narrator??) narrator saying: “A 54% increase in knife crime since the Labour mayor seized power [seized power? He was ELECTED, you dummies!] has the metropolis teetering on the brink of chaos. And in the chaos, people seek a desperate reprieve.”Not only was the station shown not in London or even in the UK, but it was Penn Station in New York! And the claim that there has been “a 54% increase  in knife crime was also completely false: in 2016/17 the total number of police recorded knife or sharp instrument offences in London was 12,077 and by 2022/23 it was 12,786, an increase of, er, 5.9%.It seems the hopeless Hall is so desperate she can only run using distasteful and dishonest tactics.

Hall is trying a new piece of dishonesty: she is claiming that Sadiq has "secret plans to impose new charges for every single mile you drive – a pay-per-mile London,” even faking a sign to that effect. Let's be quite clear: this is a lie and should be exposed as such. Sadiq has stated clearly enough for the dimmest candidate for Mayor to understand that he has no such plans, but Hall has doubled down by claiming that he promised not to bring in the ULEZ expansion and subsequently did. I understand that some of these videos are causing alarm to those in the UK tourist trade as they is giving a false impression of the country - especially when the film is not of London but the US!!

Stats on accidents are based on the speed of vehicles. Putting a 20mph signs up does not necessarily mean accidentals will be reduced. Vehicles may still being travelling more than the 20 mph speed limit.Also heavy vehicles such as buses and lorries can cause disproportionate injuries due to their weight even at low speeds.Making major routes the same speed limit as minor roads may also push traffic on roads that are least suitable and increase accidents.Looking at recent accidents it seems crazy that Wandsworth turn a blind eye (perhaps a form of local corruption) to illegally parked cars on for example Charlwood road which then often perform dangerous manoeuvres whilst supporting 20mph limits on the South circular.

Putting aside the 20mph speed limit which is based on vehicles traveling at 20mph which is not the same thing as a 20mph speed limit.Crime in London is at shocking levels. The crime is so high that the risks of cycling and locking up your bike is so high it is probably best not to cycle.The stats from being attacked in London are probably higher than being run over by a vehicle travelling on a 30mph road

Although the Conservative head office video ad has, sadly, lost the sequence set in New York, it’s still worth listening to; it would be really funny if it wasn’t simultaneously sinister “In the depths of these narrow passageways,” goes the ludicrous voiceover, “tread squads of Ulez enforcers dressed in black, faces covered with masks, terrorising communities at the beck and call of their Labour mayor master, who has implemented a tax on driving, forcing people to stay inside or go underground. Gripped by the tendrils of rising crime, London citizens stay inside. The streets are quiet….”https://twitter.com/Conservatives/status/1772321715713982730Oh, and it also has the banner headline “FACT: London under Labour has become a crime capital of the world.” Really? The actual FACTS are that in the NUMBEO Crime Index by City 2024 (https://www.numbeo.com/crime/rankings.jsp), London comes 96th.. What’s more, it isn’t even the worst in the UK: Yorkshire & the Humber, the North East, the North West and the West Midlands all have higher crime rates (https://www.statista.com/statistics/1254571/uk-crime-rate-by-region/) - and some of them even have Conservative mayors!
Honestly, you couldn’t make this stuff up - except that the Tories have managed to do so.

That's a farce to say the least. Labour hasn't been in power to do any of these things for 13 years. Meanwhile the tax burden is higher under the Conservatives than ever before As for crime, don't make me laugh. It's not just London under Khan where crime levels are so high.

I received an email from the Conservative Party at 8:31am today entitled Grim and I copy-paste it below:  Labour tax you more. They give you less. Your streets are dirtier. And less safe.

That's the reality of Life under Labour, whether they're in charge of a council, a PCC area, a mayoral office or a nation.

Knife crime is up 54% while Sadiq Khan closed 36 police stations. Some Labour-controlled councils in London have allowed fly-tipping to increase by over 60%. And the mayoral council tax has increased every year by 9.7%.

Sadiq Khan has also imposed a £12.50 daily charge on people wanting to drive their car.
In England's second city, Birmingham, Labour's mismanagement bankrupted the city.

Meaning for residents a 21% council tax hike, hundreds of lost jobs and dimmed street lights. They're even charging residents to take the rats out.
And in Wales they've imposed an unnecessary 20mph speed limit that hurts businesses and hampers emergency services.

Seems it was Conversative HQ that created and sent round the video:https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cpw05l5p6d7o"Ms Hall told the BBC the video had "nothing to do" with her mayoral campaign team and that she had not watched either version. A spokesperson for Ms Hall said the video had been created by Conservative Party headquarters.The Conservative Party's head office declined to comment."
