Warning about cash points in the High St
> A warning re cash points on Putney High St. Last night a woman had her card taken by the NatWest cash point opposite Sainsbury's. After fiddling about with the bit where you put your card in, a plastic section, made to look like the front of the cash machine came off! She luckily had her banking app on her phone and immediately froze her account. She reported the cash machine as well. Today I talked to a member of staff in NatWest who confirmed a current problem with all the cash machines in the high street. The scammers, usually after 6pm, block or do something to 4 of the 5 cash machines, so people go to use the one that seems to be working. Except that one turns out to have their skimming equipment attached and your card is eaten. Scammers, who are watching, then zip over, take your card, and before you know it they've done several transactions. Unless you've already frozen your account. (I'm not sure if freezing your account prevents them using the card, or if that means it's easier for you when reporting the problem to your bank, as they can see what time you froze it and ensure you don't lose any money). NatWest, and other banks, are trying to get the police to go undercover and catch them. Hopefully they will soon! So the advice is to use cash machines inside NatWest or Lloyds for the time being. It causes much anguish and hassle. If only they put as much energy into good causes!
