Sainsbury's Putney

Werter road, I wonder why the cig counter on the left as you go in is now full of Vapes.

All supermarkets do this now.Vapes are "on show" but cigarettes are hidden in drawers. Why?  I have no idea.

Isn't it now a legal requirement to hide the cigarettes?

Michael Ixer ● 1010d

Yes,  there is a legal requirement to hide cigarettes.  The used to be behind sliding doors. Now, all vapes are on display and behind the sliding doors.  The cigarettes have been moved to drawers under the display.

Putting cigarettes on display is advertising them for sale and is known to encourage the sale of them to teenagers.Smoking costs the NHS a fortune and also makes it more difficult for any wounds you have to heal.https://ash.org.uk/media-centre/news/press-releases/smoking-costs-society-17bn-5bn-more-than-previously-estimated

Cigarettes also cause a lot of fires - I wonder how many are caused by vapes.

Philippa, no need to preach on cigarettes; everybody is very aware including smokers. The question here is why are vapes so clearly on display at the tobacco counters.  If you would care to take a look next time you are in a supermarket, you will see that vapes are "advertised" unashemedly - very visible indeed.

> The question here is why are vapes so clearly on display at the tobacco counters.  Isn't the answer obvious?Vapes are prominently displayed because doing so isn't banned. They don't fall under the same legislation as cigarettes/cigars/loose-tobacco, etc.

I'd re-phrase that to say that vapes are prominently displayed simply because they are in the news as there is talk of them being banned - or rather the disposible ones that are flavoured like bubble gum and fruit flavours with lithium batteries you can't separate from them which attract non-smokers (eg teenagers or younger) are.  It has been a long time coming.Letter from paediatricians 2019:https://www.theguardian.com/society/2019/nov/26/vaping-poses-serious-threat-to-childrenTeachers have been complaining that they have children who are unable to get through a morning's school without going for a vape.  They are becoming addicted to it.Vaping however is believed to be less bad than and a good way to GIVE UP smoking tobacco - and that can't be a bad thing.Although this does seem rather hypocritical:https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/tories-sunak-donation-vaping-children-b2407752.html

The reason I put this on the Forum was because, they were new shelves and I had seen them filling them. That's All.

Another programme this morning where the discussion shows that vaping for youngsters has meant it has become a gateway to using tobacco.  Although it is illegal to sell them to under 18s shops aren't necessarily checking and with the use of social media it is easier to find other ways to buy and sell.I wish Sainsbury's wouldn't sell drugs like Nurofen at knee-height.

Just found out the lady who is always telling customers to go to the self checkout isn't even a Manager. Another lady who has trouble walking and was holding on to her trolley asked for a till to be opened. Eventually one of the staff filling a shelf came to help and asked the one who told her to why me.  The one who told her then had to help on self checkout as one wasn't working and a lady was telling her even the self checkout behind her wasn't working as a man found out, who then had to be taken to another self checkout. How stupid. No staff.  Also Boots last week had about 4 Security Staff walking around the shelves and one person on the till as you go out. All madness.  They have to pay for Security, why not pay for staff.

I suspect that they outsource security to a specialised company.
