Ed. I agree if one can find a good independent restaurant with food and ambience that one enjoys that's ideal. Unfortunately, Putney has no vegan restaurant, although I understand Mildred's is opening a branch soon in Wimbledon. (A restaurant that's gone from an independent veggie one in Soho to a small vegan branch.)The advantage of some chains if one's traveling is consistency. Some - like Wagamama, Pizza Express, Zizzi, Los Iguanos - have reasonable vegan options and a manual of food allergies and intolerance for their dishes. (After Pret's case they're paranoid about being sued.) We're getting wary of independents (or some chains) that claim they can adapt dishes to or have vegan options. They sometimes aren't very knowledgeable; egg isn't vegan (even Hindu veggies don't eat them), and a small amount of dairy in the sauce isn't an acceptable mistake if someone's lactose intolerant :-(
