A Merry Christmas to all on the forum, and a picture of a Christmas sometime between 1941 and 1945 at a POW work camp in Silesia, WWII - my late father, Lance Bombardier Ixer, is the one holding the cat:
https://flic.kr/p/2k4ka8ZOk, apologies, this isn't random and I have posted this image before, but it just seemed appropriate with what's going on in the world this Christmas.I believe my father saw Dresden both on his way to imprisonment and again making his way west when the work camp German guards fled in the wake of the Russian advance. I was interested that after nearly five years of being a prisoner of war in harsh conditions he was none the less doubtful about the need to firebomb Dresden at that stage of the war. He didn't talk about his war experiences much, except his desire to go back to Crete - where he served and was captured after the German invasion there - he thought of it as a beautiful island with nice people; he, my mother and I travelled there in the 1970s and we shared a glass or two of mavrodaphni :-)
