historic Putney

I read that the Bricklayers Arms (1826) is the oldest pub in Putney. Just curious - are there any surviving businesses older than that, a boat club or school perhaps?

The official list entry for the Kings Head says 'Probably 17th Century with alterations and additions'.  What can be seen supports that, except Roehampton Village only really started in the late 17th, early 18th C.

Further to my earlier post, the original King's Head pub in Roehampton was generally cited as having been the oldest secular building in the parish.

'Oldest pub' depends on definition. 'Oldest still operating in original premises?' 'Oldest but not still etc?' 'Oldest ever?'  By the first definition, the Green Man (c.1700) has a strong claim. By the second, I'd be inclined to say the Fox & Hounds, there having been an inn on the site, 'At the Sign of the Anchor', possibly as far back as the 16th century.

The  oldest  part  of  Putney  is  the  tower  of  St  Mary' s. The  rest  is  a  Victorian  and  1970s  rebuild. The  oldest  secular  building  I  believe  is  The  Winchester  Club  on  Lower  Richmond  Road.

Montague Roehampton, even though pulled down had to be rebuilt.  Believe the Winchester Club has the oldest doorway.
