Barnes River Bridge

The new extension going under the bridge which was just built so you can walk under the bridge onto the towpath flooded with high tide. The Hammersmith site were laughing saying hope they don't use the same builders for Hammersmith Bridge.  Would have thought who ever designed the new walkway would have thought about the height first. Wonder how much money was wasted on that.

Thank you Barbara for your explanation - the English language is a wonderful vehicle for creating misunderstandings is it not, and I now know what a spring tide is - yet more dross lifting from my sight.

Yes; Mr Google says: "A spring tide is a common historical term that has nothing to do with the season of spring. Rather, the term is derived from the concept of the tide "springing forth." Spring tides occur twice each lunar month all year long without regard to the season."

I heard last night that the Uber clipper boat has not been able to get under Putney Bridge recently because of the exceptionally high tide.

It's the UK. So little investment and always having to build around listed structures.Just be thankful we can walk across the footbridge and cross the river. A minor miracle in itself in 2023.Terrible for pushing bikes up and down the steps even with the new wheel guides.

Yes, they are called Spring Tides because they spring!!  It is the alignment of the Earth, Moon and Sun that cause very high tides. They happen twice a month. Nothing to do with the season!!

They call them Spring Tides, even though it's not Spring, as I said every 14 days.  Just look up spring tides. It will explain for the disbelievers.

Richard, I'm not stupid because anybody like myself knows the footpath floods and as a kid it would run up White Hart Lane as well. That's why they built the higher wall to stop the houses opposite flooding. No they obviously couldn't build the walkway any higher as the base of the bridge is in the way.  So why waste money in the first place. Every two weeks you get a high tide. Sometimes you have to wait to get under Hammersmith Bridge, if a high tide, because you can't get your boat under until the tide goes down. How do you know do you sit and wait for it. It will happen a lot more, even by the White Hart pub the path floods regularly.

I presume this only occurs during exceptionally high tides. Remember that sufficient headroom is required under the bridge, so it may not have been possible to make the walkway much higher..

Daft comment: the path has flooded once only, and then with an exceptionally high tide. The footway often floods, on both sides, would you bleat about those as well?
