Sainsbury's

Lunch time today as I was just going into Sainsbury's a lady set the alarm off, 3 New Security Guards surrounded her, looked in her 2 bags and let her go. Haven't seen the security guards before, must be new. The reason for this is? 1 till opened all the rest self checkout. So now they pay for more Security, instead of more staff. Madness.

Very bad management in my view.Extending for two years just months before. Forcing her out. Haggling over the payout, which caused delays in her replacement. No plan, no strategy.Now a replacement is there, he brings up breaking the Met up.You couldn't make it up.

Yes, Ed, but that's behind my point; he didn't have the authority to dismiss her - at least not without the Home Secretary's agreement -  but sometimes even if one doesn't have the authority it's possibly to influence the situation to get the outcome one wants. I suspect with reorganising the Met into more than one force it might be more difficult to influence an outcome.  I don't believe Khan has the authority to do that without the Home Secretary's agreement and, even with that, I suspect it might need an Act of Parliament? (I'm not sure about that, I'm prepared to be corrected if someone has the references. )

Barbara, l'm sure she has a sufficiently large pay off and pension not to have to work unless she wants to. I was just responding to Ed's comment with a pedantic point as I know he likes to get all these details pinned down accurately :-)

Tuesday afternoon the lift is still not working. It does really begin to look as though they're just running the shop down in order to justify closing it.

Technically, Ms Dick resigned so Mr Khan didn't dismiss her, although I agree she resigned on the basis that he'd lost confidence in her. Anyway, that wasn't the answer to my question, which when I've time I can research myself.

Today Sunday: The lift at Werter Rd Sainsburys is not working - Oh dear! However there were open tills and you do get help loading the car once you have brought it up from the car park.

Barbara - there is an opinion piece article in the March 2023 Which? magazine which you would enjoy.Apparently staff have to spend so much time helping people at the self-service tills and get so much abuse that they don't like them either.  Since they only suit a small number of users - mostly those in a hurry only wanting a few things - why not open more manned tills? The article is entitled "Why I hate Self-Service Checkouts". The final paragraph reads:"Self-service checkouts don't serve the interests of customers or staff - only supermarkets themselves."So I guess it must just be some executive decision.

Indirectly customers are paying for the increase security.The lack of visible police with other factors has resulted in a downward spiral.Khan mentioned breaking up the Met recently. Pity he didn't have a plan a couple of years ago when it would have made sense. Now it would be another couple of years of uncertainty.The sad fact is that our politicians are so far removed from everyday reality of simply things like travelling on public transport or even shopping.I'm not a fan of Diane Abbott's politics but I do admire her for travelling on the tube despite of the vile threats and abuse she has received - some even from inside her own party.

What ever you have to say Andy, the shop is only across the road to my road. If you use the small one on the Upper they charge more. What you don't seem to realize is it's the customer spending money that keeps the shop going, so as far as I am concerned yes it should change. Because at the moment the Security are looking at everybody as though they are thieves.  Also my neighbour was in the small Boots and she was trying to signal to the staff on the Pharmacy a man was filling his bag with medication. When my friend got to the counter, she said did you not understand what I was trying to tell you, OH no sorry.

People shop in places by habit and because they are less inconvenient than going elsewhere.  How much does it take to put customers off going there altogether you have to ask?
