It's worth noting that the head line refers to a big shop where the cost ranged from £325 to £360 approx.In another category, basket of goods £67-£85 Waitrose was the most expensive.Interesting results. I guess a lot will come down to what is actually in your shopping trolley.

We shop at Waitrose. Loyalty cards give us 1.50 to £2 + on every shop. We just find it convenient though not the best run supermarket ever but then again is there one!

Yes "...if you don't use a loyalty card..." Just use one! If you do, you get 10-25% rebate on probably 30% of the shop. At the same time Waitrose card gives you exactly nothing. Zilch, nada , zero.And you can pay in Nectar points (that I convert from Avios as the air miles are usually pretty useless). So I'd say Sainsbury's are where they used to be in terms of cost, only they are a bit annoying skewing the prices up a bit to give the Nectar users a discount that is not really one. Tesco is doing exactly the same.

In the Coop the other day we noticed the muddle of prices per 100g and prices per kg which is something that Which? has complained about.  I still find it bizarre that supermarkets should expect customers to be 'loyal'.  Surely the majority of people shop wherever it is most convenient depending on where they are  on each particular day although we may have favourite foods and shops.  How many 'loyalty' cards do you have?And is it just a myth that it is bad for your credit rating if you shop using a credit/debit card in one of the cheaper supermarkets?  Is this another good reason to use cash?

An interesting point. Supermarkets want you to use loyalty cards so they can collect one's data. If you can only get discounts if you agree to discounts is one's consent freely given for them to collect your data as required by the GDPR?I must have a word with one of the data protection lawyers I know to see if they get around this by using something like legitimate interest ...

"...if you don't use a loyalty card..."This is a really pernicious trend amongst all of the supermarkets, I hope it gets stamped out ASAP.
