Sainsburys again

Just been to Werter Road S. No manned checkouts except tobacco counter where I found myself behind a woman with a bulging shopping bag (my guess 20 items minimum). Young woman at checkout said she couldn't handle it. Customer said it was her only alternative. She asked for a manager. Some minutes later male attendant turned up and said "arrangements" were being made. I guess I waited 10 minutes before being served. A male attendant was lingering nearby, and I told him the situation was impossible, and that it was a great way to lose customers. His response: "It's policy".  Waitrose is much, much better.

Spoken to another Manager today, he said they are not shutting, but might shut for a few days for a refurb, new fridges etc and changes in the shop.

There are plenty of toilets in pubs, restaurants, the Exchange ect. during the day. It is when shops are closed and the Pubs turn out customers that the peeing on the High St begins.

To be honest, I know Asda and large Sainsbury's have toilets. But years ago didn't really like using the toilets unless they had a lady in them keeping them clean.  Years ago in Sheen where the cinema used to be on the left Sheen Lane. There were downstairs toilets there, wouldn't go down there on my own. Never knew who was in there. There used to be toilets in the middle of the road by the Railway Pub in Putney they were downstairs as well. That was years ago.

Well there used to be toilets at local police stations and tea!Unlike everyone Police work 24/7.

No there are no 24/7 public toilets in Putney but that’s a problem for everybody not just the police

Due to Labour/Conservative policy - police are already working quite far from their station. Now not only do they have to carry toilet roll - if caught short and have to use a public toilet (which there are hardly any) they also now need to bring their own cup for a brew!Sorry but doesn’t everybody away from home or office and caught short have to resort to a public toilet? Nothing to do with party politics

Is this a problem particular to Werter Road? Our local Sainsbury’s and the one in Barnes where I have just been seem to have people on the checkouts and there apparently is no problem in Wandsworth Sainsbury’s. Suspect with others that Putney is earmarked for closure so there’s no investment in people. Hope I’m wrong.

Because tills are not maned, if tills had staff, it makes it harder for people to get out of the shop. Customers can easily put a few things in their bag with out scanning, there is usually only one Security Staff in Putney Sainsbury's at a time, he can't watch everybody. I've noticed one of the Managers stands near the self checkout,also keeping an eye on the cig counter.

The John Lewis statement said it was hoped that if it attracted police then JL hoped it would act as a deterrent to shop lifters. The  question is why is shop lifting becoming such a big problem? Society seems to be breaking down: poverty caused by growing inequalities in society?

It's beginning to sound like a ill thought out gimmick IMO.Perhaps the press release should have been more specific and perhaps they did not know or think of the reality of the situation??Due to Labour/Conservative policy - police are already working quite far from their station. Ed. No, badly worded, in a hurry. I meant a lot of people going to coffee shops take their own reusable cup. (Some places give a discount for bringing your own reusable cup.) So not an inconvenience for police officers to do that if they want free coffee?

Yes, I believe the deal is the officers have to bring their own reusable cup. That's surely not a great hardship as many take these to coffee shops anyway.
