Stinking hypocrisy

Ministers fiercely defended the below-inflation pay rises for public sector workers last year on the grounds that they had been proposed by the independent pay review bodies and therefore couldn't be queried.This year, though,  it's reported in the Times on Saturday that Sunak "is prepared to overrule the independent pay review bodies if pay rises are considered to be unaffordable because they could set off a 'wage-price spiral'".What price their independence now?

Well, Starmer's Labour may agree with the Tories:-"Labour does not rule out rejecting public sector pay advice from review bodies" (Independent yesterday).

I have not forgotten that when Jeremy Hunt was Health Secretary he overruled the 'independent pay review body' and refused to pay the recommended increases.

Meanwhile, amid the mortgage interest rate crisis, Sunak complacently declares that "I want people to be reassured that we've got to hold our nerve, stick to the plan and we will get through this."Easy enough to say when your family's total net worth is around £530 million!
