Putney High street

Really had to laugh going to the big Boots, one side of the M & S looked liked it had been cleared outside one door, but the other still had loads of junk newspapers etc all on the floor. But what made me laugh was the the ivy climbing up outside somebody had got a load of artificial Red Roses and attached them to the ivy. Would have been better if the rubbish had been cleared.

I think Penelope brightened the ivy up with the roses. Looks good!

Aaaah the primary subject! Could we not have some properly maintained and colourful displays on our High Street all the year round? Surely Positively Putney could manage to organise this. Perhaps the Putney Bid could employ a suitably attired Beadle to water them throughout the week with a swan necked watering can...

Root vegetables apparently taste sweeter in winter - something to do with the starch they store being converted to sugars.  We used to eat more turnips in this country before the potato was introduced.  I'd forgotten that bit of history.I actually prefer carrots, parsnips and beetroot roast and in soups. Last year I spent some time trying to eat celeriac by trying out recipes.  I just love celeri remoulade.  Root vegetables can also be good mixed with mashed potato.  I've also eaten beet greens.

Apparently there is a shortage of tomatoes - although all the shops in Putney had them.Most this time of year come from Southern Spain or Morocco which is not very green - so perhaps not actually a bad thing.With prices ranging from £2 to £10 a kilo I'm not sure at what point it would be more profitable for the bootleggers to switch to illicit fruit & veg.

I hope that the M&S building is being regularly checked.Recent reports suggest that gangs are using empty high street properties to grow illicit crops such as cannabis and tomatoes!
