Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.
In these days of instant communication its interesting and somewhat frustrating that getting a simple straightforward answer is so difficult. There is no direct telephone line to use when contacting Thames Water, Virgin Media, Openreach, WBC and so on. Their websites are less than user friendly if the question posed is a “general” one like this.
Some of the fibre optic providers will tell you things like “We are bringing superfast broadband to you soon” but won’t say exactly when this will happen apart from a “by 2026” hedged around with caveats. Open Reach and Community Fibre are examples. I can’t work out which department at WBC to ask. Anyone have any suggestions?
I’m thinking of getting some purple spray paint and spreading “N” marks every 3 metres along the pavements to see if anyone notices.

PS. I had a white painted mark outside my house for about the last three months. It said, I think, BOL. No one knew what it meant. Two weeks ago two workmen from Conroy’s (aprivate contractor) turned up and began using drills to make a channel from the gully in the road to my fence. I went out to ask them what was going on. They explained that the Council was installing a meter to measure the height of water in the gully. We did have bad flooding in 2021, so this sounded like a good idea. A week later they came back and tarmaced the pavement leaving a flexible hose sticking up by my fence on which they placed a bollard. Nothing since. No, no communication from the Council, Conroys or anyone else. Ho hum. But now I know what a white painted BOL means.
