This arrest of someone allegedly involved in a disaster caused by people smuggling is a good sign. Let's hope a record of his communications messages leads to further arrests in the UK and France. Looking at the information and facts available to him at the time I'd be interested to know what part of Professor Ferguson's report, either the maths or assumptions,  were unreasonable. Obviously, there's a better understanding of the virus, its effects and transmission now but they weren't available in January/February 2020.

You did this recently saying Russia had bombed Poland, which was incorrect.You really need to get your facts right before posting.Too much misinformation on this site from the Guardian reading crowd over the last 2 years.Professor Ferguson has proved to be the worst forecaster of all time, and most of you took him for his every word.You were criticising the government for opening up too soon after omiCON, but they were right and you look foolish now!I'm sure this is why the pool of people posting on this forum is limited to the same dozen or so posters.It's like living in a echo chamber on here, and it's deters others from joining in.

An article in the DM by Andrew Neil, that covers some of these issues.It reminds me of the last years of the Labour government. Oddly enough many of those in power are now in the shadow cabinet. Always wondered what the millionaire Starmer classes as working people. Does he have a ££limit where anyone earning over a certain figure is not classed as 'working'.For instance will he raise the limit on 40% payers to ensure his train driver friends earning £60-70k get a tax reduction?

Starmer rules out Swiss style deal as it crosses one of his red lines.So we just need to wait a couple of weeks for those red lines to fade I guess.As for Brexit, if the UK had regular referendums like other democracies we would not be in this mess. Indeed, Michael, and not only have the Brexiteers here been unable to describe any benefits, but the much-trumpeted trade deal with Japan (Truss, who signed it, described it as a historic deal and a landmark moment for Britain) turns out to be a dud. Morita-Jaeger and Larbalestier of Sussex University have analysed trade figures and found that the level of trade with Japan actually fell in the year since the deal was signed. Yes, Ivonne,  Mr W is correct in that, and those that were hoodwinked by the lies of Fsrage and the ESG are making the rest of us pay for their mistake.I note that that Richard Carter is still waiting g for someone to post the benefits. As I've said before; Brexit is complex, the disadvantages are real, the benefits are imaginary, and if you look at benefits in relation to time they approach infinity. Sadly, Brexit is an unmitigated disaster.

I wholeheartedly agree, Michael W.But it certainly was one, if not the most, trumpeted problem... Brexit was stage managed by Farage and the ERG to avoid, at all costs, the EU Anti Tax Avoidance Directive. I do not think I need to repeat what this is and why it came about.

The reason for Brexit was to address a feud within the Conservative Party. Many voters were hoodwinked into thinking that immigraton from the EU was a bad thing and that Brexit would reduce overall levels of net migration. Hoodwinked on both counts.

Andy,The article clearly indicates that there were 73,000 asylum applications this year until September which is a very small proportion of the total number of reaching the country.  It also states the number of immigrants welcome from Ukraine and Hong Kong - and quite rightly so!The article also mentions that some 277,000 people came to study in the UK, almost doubling the rate of the previous year.As far as I remember, one of the main issues for Brexit was immigration which needed to be stopped.  Another aspect of Brexit was stopping the Erasmus and Entente Cordial programmes because too many EU students were coming to study in the UK......

"After subtracting those who emigrated"One of theses days we will be able to discuss the taboo subject of emigration.If we do not offer people especially the young a good future even more people will leave.I see no logic in even reporting net migration figures apart from political statistical reasons.Housing costs, low standards of living, high crime, graduate debt are factors as is Brexit and the weather.These were factors pre-Brexit unfortunately.
