Hammersmith Toll solution for Putney residents

I have a bit of sympathy with Hammersmith & Fulham Council as the government should really be paying for most of the cost of the repair of Hammersmith Bridge. However, although a toll might be needed to make the numbers add up it is not necessarily a good solution. Exemption for people on one side of the river is unfair particularly as the toll will direct people towards Putney seeking to avoid it. One way to address this would for Wandsworth to impose tolls on Putney Bridge but exempt H&F residents as well as Wandsworth ones. In return there could be a reciprocal arrangement for Wandsworth residents to use Hammersmith Bridge free of charge.

Or they could could be practical and remove the old suspension bridge and have it restored around the county in metal shops, build a modern concrete structure upstream and use that for keeping Hammersmith Bridge and the iconic look alive.Meanwhile, a modern bridge is built for Hammersmith One Way and takes the pressure off Chiswick, Kew, Putney and Wandsworth Bridges.

One of the first things they stopped was the 72 bus that provided an essential service from Roehampton to Hammersmith.There does seem to be a bit of an overlap  regarding those that do not want public transport to go across the bridge and those that are Putney centric. This is after all the SW15 forum!

@Richard. Have a word with China. Our sacrifices are like pi***** in the ocean. But at least you can be self-righteous eh? I say knock the bridge down and build a proper one. Ironically, we all know the aforementioned Chinese would have had one there in no time.

One day, when it's probably too late, people will look beyond the end of their noses, stop moaning about relative trivia and realise that climate change and atmospheric pollution, to which motor traffic makes a significant contrubution, are so much more serious. But I'm not holding my breath (advisable though that may be when so many cars are around).

So you like all the traffic in Putney Matt, that's a bit stupid. At 15 I would sit in traffic in Castlenau on a bus trying to get to the big offices in Olynpia worrying about being late for work. So I have news for you we had traffic in those days it's not a new thing. That was on a bus from Sheen to Olympia.

Surely the people that insist on it being listed and preserved should pay?It has been in a dreadful state for years - is it really going to look any better and last a few decades until the next major repair?I guess there is the opposite view that young people haven't got enough debt so lets heap some more on them!A complete fiasco and failure of government at every level as usual and the opposition no better. What a waste of money.

What a load of rubbish, Putney has put up with all the traffic for ages. Now you actually want Putney residents to pay to go to the other side of the Bridge. What planet are you on. Hammersmith has had problems for years from when I was a kid. They should have looked after it better. Richmond Council and Hammersmith and Fulham. Do your job and stop blaming everybody else.
