New power to issue fines over drivers exceeding the limit in 20mph zones

Excellent news: Wandsworth council is the first in the UK to be given the power to issue its own 20mph speed fines, the Evening Standard reports. They have moved the signs on again on the Tibbets Roundabout approach, so that the 30mph heading north starts a bit earlier.Crazy that a six lane carriage way would have the same speed as a residential road .There is one stretch on Fulham Road which has a 30mph limit that lasts less than 100 yards. I wonder who thinks these things up?

Agreed Matt,The side roads are very dangerous.That said with parts of URR now 20mph the most direct root would be the greenest.Obviously better not to travel by car but if you a delivery driver or just the Mayor the quickest and greenest root may be more residential.

If you do not break the speed limit, there is no fine.  Simples. If WBC gets some extra revenue from people who cannot observe this simple truth, I'm all for it.

Sue, it has nothing to do with Khan and TFL!!!Speed cameras are managed by the police, speeding is a matter for the police.I am very pleased that the Council is taking this initiative.  I just wish, and hope, other secondary roads will get such a speed cameras because the 20 mph speed limit is certainly not followed/respected.

Enforcement is key.If we have a 20mph sign it should be enforced. Preferably when it is installed. You can of course give people warnings initially but they should be stopped.What doesn't make any sense is having 20mph sign installed then putting on your website you are not going to enforce it and years later talking about enforcement .Fairly easy to enforce buses which often run over 20mph. Buses are no different to lorries (slightly better outcome in not dying).Now if some roads should be 20mph that is a different question. Tibbets roundabout approach is a good example.How things are done does unfortunately give weight to the fact that is about the money and one side denying this is as silly as those denying the safety benefits. (Police just before Tibbets roundabout was an good example - which is now back to 30mph!!)

The council needs to enforce this on some random residential roads. I regularly see cars bombing it along Hazlewell, Larpent etc. Makes me very nervous for my son around our streets.

When 20mph was introduced on Putney Hill going up to tibbets corner, when people followed it I noticed that traffic actually flowed better due to cars being able to judge the speed and filter from side roads easily.

The usual anti-Khan pro-motorist stuff from the Mail - and the "survey revealing [the plan's] unpopularity" turns out (surprise, surprise) to be a few comments from the usual "angry motorists."For a proper survey, see YouGov's report based on interviewing 1,245 people (https://www.clientearth.org/latest/press-office/press/majority-of-londoners-support-expansion-of-the-ultra-low-emission-zone/) which showed a 51 to 33% support for the ULEZ expansion.

An extraordinary post from Lucille. This is perfectly clearly about the safety of vulnerable road users (pedestrians, cyclists). Incidentally, in my OP I mentioned Roehampton Lane: thst should of course have been Priory Lane.

I live on Wimbledon Park Road. Sometimes when a fully laden skip lorry hits a speed bump at 40-50mph it feels like a bomb has gone off. I'm in favour of this enforcement

Totally agree with this. However I would suggest that pedestrians are more likely to be wary and careful on large roads like Priory Lane, Putney Hill etc and therefore accidents less likelyCameras instead are needed on the smaller side roads where you see more likely to get kids playing and pedestrians moving around more freely, and motorists still going way over 20mph. This is where the cameras, fines and points should be given instead of a main road

This 20 mph limit is by Wandsworth Council, not Sadiq Khan, Ms Hammond.From Mr Carter's Evening Standard link:-"However, the money raised by the council cameras can be ploughed back into road safety initiatives in the borough."No mention of air fares. The WBC link says:-"The cost of implementing the scheme is being met by a Transport for London grant that will pay mainly for appropriate signage and road markings to inform the drivers of the new limit, and the before and after speed monitoring. "So money is coming FROM TFL, not going to Mr Khan.

Sue. I know you don't like Khan but this is Wandsworth Council not TfL or the Greater London Assembly council. As someone who mainly uses public transport and only the occasional Zipcar I've no issue with this if it helps protect pedestrians and cyclists.

That’s correct David. I did a speed awareness course after being fined for doing 25 in a 20 mph! It makes you think differently when you see the stopping distances between 30 - 20 mph and the damage one can cause as you said.The actual journey time you save is absolutely minimal as well!!

More money in the Council's coffers. This is not about saving lives at all. Parkside (fines going to Merton I'd guess)is a joke to drive down now and Priory Lane will no doubt be the same.

I just do not understand why WP road needs to be 20mph... just doesn't make any sense to me! Let alone Roehampton lane.
