I hope this means the 14 and 74 bus routes, among others earmarked for being cut, are now safe?"After over a month of hard negotiations, and three rejected deals, we finally have a long-term funding settlement for Transport for London. As Mayor, I’ve been determined to stand up for London and protect our transport network. Here’s what the deal means for Londoners:As Mayor, it’s my job to stand up for London when it’s under attack from the Tory government. This is exactly what I’ve done in the month-long negotiations for a longer term funding deal for Transport for London. After pushing back hard, we have won a number of key concessions. Not only does this mean we no longer face having to make massive cuts to vital transport services, but we have been able to save the jobs of thousands of transport workers. The Tories wanted to force us to cut one in five buses and 10 per cent of tube services. But we put a stop to that. Just like we put a stop to Ministers trying to take away free travel for children and those over 60.However, it’s not all good news. The Tories are still leaving TfL with a significant funding gap. This means TfL will likely be forced to increase fares in the future and proceed with some service cuts. The Government has also attached unfair, unnecessary and damaging conditions to this deal, with attacks on the terms and conditions of transport workers that seem designed simply to provoke further industrial action. The sole cause of TfL’s financial crisis is the impact of the pandemic. That’s why it’s simply wrong for the Tories to punish Londoners and transport workers in this way. Levelling up the country should not be about levelling down London. With Labour standing up for our city, we’ve managed to avoid the worst. I will now work flat out to mitigate the impact of the conditions imposed by the Tory government and do everything possible to ensure we maintain a world-class transport network – something that’s so crucial as we strive to continue building a greener, fairer and more prosperous London for everyone.Share my statement and help us to get the message out to Londoners.Best wishesSadiq"
