Stonking success in Putney High Street

YesAll three of the silver birches planted in pots at the junction with Putney Bridge Rd are dead.

Don't be daft Jane.If I see something isn't happening like the watering of trees and plants and they are suffering then I'd do something. I don't just watch it and whinge.  But then it looks like would.

There has been a roll back of the state and we now have prospective leaders promising more.  That doesn't bode well for many.  Indeed. However you seem t be advocating a roll back of the state: no high street washing because that encourages people to drop rubbish: no more bins because people put  too big things in them etc.  If the council plant trees in the high street they are responsible for at least organising the watering of them as they are for cleaning the pavements. It’s different in residential streets where it seems that residents are , in fact, watering the trees.I dont doubt your good intentions but i think you would be more persuasive if you stopped telling people off and stopped pontificating. As you say ‘Actions speak louder than words”

Perhaps where you live Philippa there are not many trees, but there are so many trees in and around the Putney area, Wandsworth Park, Bishops Park, people's back gardens. Perhaps we should go back to Robin Hood days and live in the forest.

Well Sue the truth can be unpalatable.How many years does it take for a sapling to get to the size to be planted in a park?  If you've ever grown an acorn or a conker you will have learnt something of the amount of time.  So it is years of nurturing.There definitely aren't enough trees everywhere - there are lots of new buildings and patios and parking spaces and roads all of which increase and hold the heat.  In fact many people would say there are far too many of those and we need far fewer.

They shouldn't have been planted anyway, with this hot weather. Everywhere is beige not green. Your supposed not to use loads of water. There are enough trees on Putney common , Barnes Common, Putney Hill, also Wimbledon and Richmond Park. Was it really necessary to plant them in the High Street anyway.

If you walk through the parks of London you will find that every so often there are dying saplings or dying ponds or closed libraries.  There has been a roll back of the state and we now have prospective leaders promising more.  That doesn't bode well for many.  We also need to plant many more trees to deal with the climate emergency and to keep them alive.  There are few park rangers and a great many trees.  It is a very small ask that residents who take some pride in their surroundings take some little responsibility themselves.We have the dryest summer since 1976 and there are objections to paying anybody for doing anything despite the fact that many people are not earning enough or being paid enough to live on.  Everybody seems to want somebody else to do something but can't won't or doesn't make the simplest of efforts to get something done about it.  Constant whinging demoralises those who already make an effort.  Actions speak far louder than words.

Regular maintenance is the key to helping keep the High Street both clean and tidy. Positively Putney certainly need to up the game as the High Street displays are in need of far more regular attention and plant watering than they receive. They do (or they did?) have a budget for power washing the pavements on the High Street but this is not adequate and Wandsworth Council should take the responsibility to improve street cleaning.

Putney Bid should be organising, their planters outside old m and s look dismal, dying ivy, as do the 'display' outside Putney mainline Station. Meristem re plant every now and then, waste of money, how much does watering cost? Preferred my Ukrainian flag display, at least I went and maintained them regularly. High Street is a dirty dump again, BID businesses have no pride in the high Street as most don't live here. Wish LBW new Labour councillors showed some interest and were proactive. Thamesfield are responding and Token Yard is no longer a deliveroo motorbike free for all hell hole!

Apparently everybody knows how to carry water to trees seen to be put at such stress in this very dry weather but...  nobody does anything about it - they just expect someone else to do it.
