Do you really have enough knowledge of what happened, or is it just a matter of faith? Why would the Met stitch Johnson up for one event and not stitch him up for the others - according to you his innocence would not stop the Labour Met, would it? In for a penny, in for a pound.

Johnson's principle fault here was that he lied to parliament over the matter - which under the ministerial code meant that he should have resigned forthwith. It goes to character - after the Pincher affair, most people now see his unsuitability - even he has had to recognise it. Some people still don't get it.

Andy, that's perhaps a bit naive? Johnson was found in breach of the rules on only one occaision of a number of events that took place, some of which we know he attended. I've not looked at the details in depth but I think whether fines were issued will depend on the specific rules in place at the time of each events and the evidence available for each event: whether it was obviously a social event only, or whether it was a break or end of day for a team that had been working. If one had been working for a number of hours then then employment law probably stipulates there should be a meal break and I don't think there's anything that says one can't have alcoholic drink with one's meal? (In face many corporate expense rules allow a drink or two to be claimed with a meal on subsistence or managers to include alcohol as part of staffing entertaining.)Remember, Sir Keir is a lawyer, so he was probably confident the police lawyers would come to the same conclusion? :-)

I seem to recall that was a point I also made before they the last general election; Corbyn was extremely unlikely to get an overall majority so we might have had a sensible, moderated government. Of course we'll never know ... the press made sure he was never going to get the chance. Anyway, Sir Kier - and Angela - are innocent!

Isn't David's point that in 2019 the electorate were faced with a choice of Johnson or Corbyn as Prime Minister? In retrospect the wrong choice was probably made as Corbyn would have been constrained by having to operate in a coalition. Plenty of people, including those within his own party had warned us of the kind of person Johnson was and we should have paid more heed.There remains a structural problem with both British and American politics that leaders are being chosen by the membership of political parties who are the last people that should be given such power.Our next Prime Minister will be selected by around 100,000 people with an average age over 60, mainly white, mainly living in the south with views to the right of their own party's MPs and inclined to do whatever the Mail and the Telegraph tell them to. By the way, 18,000 people voted for the Conservatives in Putney in 2019. It would be interesting to see what they now feel about their choice. Do they still back it? Or are they a bit surprised at what is happening now?

"But the electorate were given no choice but Johnson in 2019, were they?'Well, there was only one Brexit party at the GE - but that single choice had nothing to do with the outcome, or so we were told.But to go back on now to a soft Brexit is political suicide apparently.The two main leaders have got the Brexit they now both want but neither knows what to do with it.We are more aligned with EU on foreign policy than before and following Nato down the economically plug hole!We may as well hold hands with the Germans and French and all sing together as we sink!
