Yes, Labour introduced the 5% VAT on energy bills in 1997 (while we were still in the EU).The point of my first post is to show that individual countries may decide on many issues (VAT, immigration, etc) and apply these nationally, but still being members if the EU...

I was being sarky Michael.  Domestic customers in the U.K. only pay 5% VAT on energy bills.  Business rate is 20%.
