London Living Wage - some questions
Although the news that the council is moving towards increased payment of the London Living Wage to people working for it is welcome, there are a few things that remain unclear to me.I presume that everyone employed directly by the council is already paid the higher rate as there are very few lower salary staff on its payroll. However, the big outside contracts in the borough are presumably refuse collection, school meals provision, enforcement and social care. In many cases these may be on longer term contracts which aren't going to be reviewed for years. You could argue that this pledge means the council may have put itself in a position where it can't afford to sack an underperforming contractor. What I be interested to hear is, given the above, a rough estimate of how many individuals are likely to benefit from this new policy this year.
