Putney BID Street clean

Did a small area outside Lydl a  week ago then stopped . Poor result, clean abandoned? Maybe new Labour Council can get a result..

Mary,We have communal recycling bins although people often seem to put non recycled waste in them.I really do not understand the logic of putting recycling in plastic bags.Surely it would make more sense to have recycling bins on the street every 50 yards or so?I do not understand why we do not do that.

I have been requesting recycling sacks from WBC for 7 weeks now.. they never deliver them to me.I ran out 3 weeks ago, and after submitting a 4th request via their online form, I am still waiting for the sacks.. so I am currently unable to recycle, because the council does not give me the means to do so, even after begging them.  I don't have a car, I can't be expected to make a weekly run to the riverside recycling centre..and the figures suggest I am not the only one with this problem!

An eternal problem on Putney High Street it would seem! The Putney Bid does have money for intensive street cleaning as I understand but whatever power washing may be taking place is patchy. I would for example imagine that the paving at the side of Wagamama is almost beyond effective cleaning it is so stained. What is required is joined up thinking with regard to Putney's street cleaning services.  An operation that cleans throughly from the top of the High Street to the bottom and also the side streets where shopping takes place is required. At the moment the poor state of the pavements on the High Street emphasise the lack lustre shopping vista.

Putney Society, I completely agree about the packaging and central governments responsibility.Until new packaging legislation becomes a reality it seems at the very least we should try and get some answers to the basic questions.WBC position on their tool (link below)% of household waste sent for reuse, recycling or composting = 23.2% which is ranked 29 out of 31 within the London Boroughs.I'm not sure if lower level information is available.https://www.wandsworth.gov.uk/the-council/open-data-and-transparency/open-council-how-we-perform-against-other-councils/

Actually one of the reasons it's so low on recycling rates is because it sends so much plastic waste to the incinerator.

It's hard to gauge the reality when we don't know how they measure the recycling per Borough. Wandsworth does, according to the Recycling Centre, have problems with so many flats, but I don't know if that's the reason it's so low down on the league tables. There is also the question of what is allowed to be recycled in Merton vs Wandsworth (some research needed to find the differences). Really, it should go back to getting a Government standard on less packaging and standardising what can be recycled. (do 3 tins of corn really need thick plastic round them so they can sell as a special offer? NO!).

We know a non-recycle bin costs more than a recycled one to process.How much money that equates to annually I can't find out but it must be a significant amount.Now I'm not saying it is easy to improve on the current situation but a good start is to admit that there is an issue and there is an environmental and economic cost in not solving it.

335 out of 341 councils! But, but? Wandsworth is incredibly well run and super efficient because it has been run by the Conservatives for so long. Or so everyone keeps saying.......

Mertons recycling is good.including food recycling.The streets though are awful

Greens who are pretty poor on things like recycling surprisingly.My brother lives in Merton better known as Mucky Merton. Street cleaning is awful there.

Putney Business Improvement District with £1million should be able to make a difference, what's the money spent on, apart from disused parklets?!

Yes, Putney High Street is a very sad affair.Down my way, surprisingly, street cleaning is very good.

But I suppose we should blame whichever political party controls the Council. Putney High Street was given a great deal of “improvement” money. Walking along it this afternoon it seems to have been wasted. Who runs yours?Nick
