The whole story about the Conservative Party and low council tax is really over-egged. Wandsworth's position as a prosperous borough with lower social services needs and many high value properties make it much easier to charge less than say Lambeth ( a popular comparison borough in Tory propaganda). Are Tory run councils across the country all charging lower taxes? Well no. The highest council tax in the country is paid in Conservative controlled Rutland. Explain that! Well they are not like us. Neither is Lambeth. According to a fact checking service used by Channel 4 "And when we rank councils by average tax per dwelling, Conservatives only control two of the cheapest 20 local authorities in England"It has to be said, Council tax round here is around the cheapest going. So here we are in a borough where the average house price exceeds £1m and we are looking for the cheapest going. I don't know about anyone else, and apologies do those who do ned to make do with the cheapest going, that is not how I run my life. Were I eating from the food bank, dressing myself from the local Oxfam shop, walking everywhere and begging my neighbours for hand-me-down furniture, I might then legitimately choose the Torys' lowest cost possible approach to public services. But in fact I can afford a little better.
