Anyone making sense of Putney High Street 4m refurbishment?

The pavement slabs have been replaced by the exact same ones, only slightly larger.And now the road itself that was perfectly fin and not too dark is being replaced by a layer of tar. That will absorb an awful lot of heat in summer, smell and become soft enough to get damaged by trucks traffic. The pollution numbers will be marginally worse because of this.Who voted this moronic refurb? Who chose the contractors who will probably have a 50% margin on this? Very upsetting in times of inflation to see money spoiled like this.

Re cleaning Putney streets. Once a week, on the dot, we have a rather noisy "street cleaning" machine go up and down our street. No water is used, and apart from small items of debris, the only thing "cleaned" is the tarmac. Indeed often it is  a case of moving one item of debris from one side of the street to the other. In France and other EU countries (sorry to mention them) street cleaning involves actual water. Not in Putney. Why? So what's the point? I thought dry cleaning was for clothes.

If they were going to narrow the road, they should have added dedicated cycle space like has been done on Kingston Hill (even that's not perfect though). And it baffles me that they've been replacing the pavement but not cleaning it. So much of the street is disgustingly dirty already.

The Copenhagen crossings are meant to clearly indicate to both pedestrians and drivers that it's a pedestrian space, but the way the council's done them doesn't do that. Take the one near the station for example. From a pedestrian's POV (on the side of the nail salon), they always have the right of way. But from a Driver's POV, if the light is green, they have the right of way. Both sides should have lights, not just the station-side. And by that point there's no value in having the thing at all.

I have written to Councillor Locker about the worsening state of Putney High Street on various occasions. The effect is now is unkempt, muddled in terms of surfacing and at points unsafe (Copenhagen crossings) and often dirty. The very overwidened pavements makes it impossible for overtaking, causing even more gridlock and delaying emergency vehicles, causing cars to mount the new widened pavements to let them pass. Copenhagen crossings  are dangerous as no kerbs to  warn pedestrians to  look out for cars  before crossing.street too narrow for bikes etc, so we now have e bikes and e - scooters whizzing along the over widened pavements terrorising pedestrians, at huge cost to taxpayers
