Expanding nighttime economy in Putney High Street

Conservative proposals to extend night time economy from 6 pm to 6am will destroy their vote in May. The consultation 'document' shows the decision already made as no boxes to object, what happened to local democracy?

Wandsworth have a general policy of the latest they'll let pubs and bars stay open on a Fri and Sat night is 2am. The Fez club is different and is 3am and 4am I think. The Night Time strategy isn't just about bars and pubs, and is to find out more about those who work and travel at night too. I'm going to hear first hand more about the Strategy and see what I can find out for myself. We definitely don't want Putney High St to be just bars and pubs. Personally think we could do with an all night diner or somewhere you could eat late at night after you've been out that isn't McDonalds!

I was in central London last night and all the pubs were kicking out around 11:30pm. Various bars were still going but i'm not aware of anywhere that will sell you a drink after 3am and I think most stop at 2.Or maybe i'm visiting the wrong places!

Yes, pub licencing hours are "flexible" these days.  I think the licensing laws changed about 10-12 years ago?  Though the idea initially was bringing in continental-style of 24hs drinking, in fact it introduced "all-day" drinking (not closing at 2pm on Sundays and cannot remember the hours during the week).I think, but may be wrong, that pubs now close at about 11:30pm during the week and later (1am?) on Fridays and Saturdays.

Aren't pub licencing hours flexible these days anyway? Circa four years ago I seem to remember at the end of some birthday celebrations ending up with friends in the Railway on a Saturday (before it became the Revolution) and being surprised we weren't chucked out until 1pm or 2pm (sorry, my memory's a little hazy).

There is no proposal to extend opening hours to 6am (or at all) and no question in the survey asking people if they want this."  Precisely!!!So, according to you, what WBC is enquiring about is for shops to be opened 24hs to enhance nightlife on PHS and perhaps assist hospitality? I may perhaps be mistaken, but I think there is a difference between national opening hours for pubs and licensing for establishments that serve food?

There is no proposal to extend opening hours to 6am (or at all) and no question in the survey asking people if they want this.Quite apart from the madness such an idea would constitute, there is no customer demand for venues to be open til 6am in PHS. No business would do it because it would be a total waste of money.As regards existing opening hours (and behaviour), if one lives near a main street in a metropolitan suburb, one must expect to observe the occasonal drunk and/or rowdy party. It is pointless to nurture and promote the futile hope that one could transform one's neighbourhood into a 1950's shire county village.

Hello Matt,Well, there is a consultation/survey on WBC's website on this which I have completed.  Here is the link:https://www.wandsworth.gov.uk/business-and-licensing/town-centres/night-time-strategy/It is ridiculous to say extending nightlife on PHS from 6 pm to 6am because pubs do not close till about 11:30pm during the week and later during weekends.It could be argued that it is a proposal at this stage, but it is madness even to think about it. Sadly, due to bitter experience, when WBC asks a question is normally because they have made their minds up.Please do check the link, it would be great if you could  complete the survey and please let me know what you think.Thank you.

To be clear. There is no proposal to keep pubs open till 6am. That's a fiction that exists only in the mind of the person who started this thread.

I am not too sure that closing the pubs is the answer.But planning to extend "nightlife" till 6am is not only diabolical but brainless too!

Now UKIP are history, as will be a Conservative majority on Wandsworth Council. Reason being that some things are more important to people than lower taxes. If you want to deter "piss heads" from Putney High St at night, I suggets you campaign to have the pubs all shut. Good luck with that.

Whoever wins the coming Council election needs to address the present appearance of Putney High Street through coordinated and strategic planning instead of ad hoc arrangements as personified by sections of unclean paving, poor road surfaces and other than two displays at the entrance to the station which are bright and well finished off, badly maintained and amateurish attempts to disguise real problems - witness the bone dry ivy whose leaves are now rapidly turning brown that remain in the doorway of our much missed M&S!

Careful what you wish for.. Didn't UKIP morph into  BXP and win the 2019 European election.. Rest is history..Low council tax has won  Wandsworth for Conservatives for about last 18 years, I for  one, just hope whoever gets in has a strategy for PHS that doesn't involve attracting piss heads!

It is an irrelevance. Their vote in May is destroyed anyway. They are going to go the way of UKIP. You might know something about that.

I don't have any strong feelings on this either way (but dont live near the high street)But to say they want to "extend the night time economy from 6 pm to 6am" seems like scaremongering to me. There's barely anywhere in central London open beyond 2-3am, chances of it happening in Putney seem very remote!

The proposal to extend night time economy is very unwise as it will cause issues for local residents - not least the potential for an increase in noise and disruption on the streets at night.

Thanks, I have already completed and submitted, there is very little opportunity to object as it is multiple choice with limited scope, Council appear to assume  we want lager louts out until 6 am
