This thread seems to be going awry. It seem reasonable to request the police and RSPCA to investigate what appeared to be a case of animal cruelty by someone who could be considered to be in a position of influence, particularly of young people?Caring for animals doesn't mean one doesn't care for people. Personally I consider to two go hand-in-hand.Following on from that, there is I believe evidence that those who abuse animals may be inclined treat humans in a similar way. (Granted not in all cases.)Pet food is an issue and some of us do worry about that. Dogs seem to thrive well on a vegan diet if it's well planned. (Benito who featured in this weeks random pics is a living example of that.) It's more difficult with cats as they're natural carnivores. There is vegan cat food (with appropriate additives) but the long term affect on cats isn't certain. Given that the cat population isn't going to disappear overnight and the meat industry is going to continue for a while I guess we have to take a pragmatic approach to that as cats need to be fed. However, it can be mitigated by choosing organic cat food from sources that are hopefully less cruel and by strengthening laws regarding farm animal welfare. Of course there isn't this problem with some pets; for example, rabbits - and I suppose the extreme vegan view is that keeping pets in itself is animal exploitation ... although I've not met any with that view. Finally, I agree, there's no need to bring race into this.

He earns £125,000 pw so the fine will hardly be noticed by him.  However his contract with Adidas has been terminated and apparently several more sponsors are considering their position also. There is also a huge backlash building in his home country France and it is possible that he will no longer be eligible to play internationally. West Ham's major sponsor Vitality has presently suspended its sponsorship which is extremely serious and a huge blow for the Club. I really hope Zouma's cruel act leads to him losing his football career, and worse."A legal complaint has been filed against the 27-year-old in Paris, where there is widespread shock at a video showing the player attacking his pet at his £2million Essex home.It led to lawyers working for the 30 Million Friends Foundation (La Fondation 30 Millions d'Amis), the largest animal rights group in France, contacting prosecutors.A spokesman for the Foundation said: 'We condemn this heinous act, have asked that the player be suspended from the France team, and filed a legal complaint against him.'According to article 113-6 of the French Penal Code, a French citizen can be prosecuted for criminal acts carried out abroad.Tough new animal protection laws were introduced in France in 2021, meaning that the 'mistreatment of animals' is now punishable by up to four years in prison and a fine equivalent to £50,000.Aggravated factors in any criminal prosecution included acts of violence being committed in front of other people, or if the animal belongs to the attacker.'In the case of Kurt Zouma, the video appears to show aggravating facts, so he could be in very serious trouble,' said another source close to the case.Senior French politicians have also condemned Zouma, who is from the eastern city of Lyon, and called him to be kicked out of France's national team."
