What's the appropriate way to recycle a broken glass bowl?

Have smashed a glass bowl and am not entirely sure what should be done with the pieces. Should I wrap them up in plastic bags and send them to landfill or wrap in newspaper (sufficient to protect binmen) and try to recycle?
