British Gas

Has anybody else been sent a new Exclusive deal that will last to 2023. The old standard one they say is variable and could go really high next April 22. Or are they talking a load of rubbish. A friend put on FB they are targeting older people to get more money from them.

Mike, thank you, I was about to cancel the new one as was worried I had been stupid, because the paperwork said press 1, if you would like to change to the new exclusive. So not sure whether to throw some dice. Stay with new one or go back to standard.

Hi Barbara,Prices currently expected to rise by 30% for the variable tariff in April…https://www.theguardian.com/money/2021/oct/07/uk-energy-bills-could-rise-30-in-2022-warn-analystsIf anything I wonder if they could be higher with the tensions with Russia which supplies much of Europe (not the UK but there is effectively a regional gas price).  Between an incoherent domestic nuclear policy over the past 20 years and the green lobby being successful in blocking fracking and more recently blocking development of new North Sea gas fields we are only likely in the medium term to become more reliant on import of foreign gas rather than producing ourselves, and as world demand grows (I believe co2 emissions for gas are half those of coal(?)) likely to push prices much higher.  Still as long as the wind is blowing we should be fine ;-)But I agree with the above - fixed price contracts being offered now are likely to bake in some significant increases.  I just checked British Gas and the fixed tariff offer seems about 40-50% higher than the current variable rate, but who knows quite what will happen of course.  It’s too late to fix now would be my thought.Might make double glazing look better value though although we live on an expensive road for that ;-)

Thank you Jane, I wasn't very impressed speaking to somebody at BGas, they have probably been told to repeat the same thing. All she kept saying was variable could go really high next April and this deal won't be available then. I had already said to her but it's not April yet.

Martin Lewis suggests that the exclusive deals are poor value for money and to stick with the variable tariff - for now
