Looking for a quieter road

Hi there, my husband and I have lived in East Putney (on the grid) for 4 years and whilst we love Putney our road is a bit of a rat run when traffic is bad on West Hill and is noisy on weekend nights (now we’re out of lockdown the drunks at 3am are back). We’re considering a move to West Putney around Bangalore/ Borneo St. it feels quiet by day but can anyone talk to west Putney being quieter during the night than East Putney. Thanks

We live about one or two roads from Bangalore/Borneo Streets and if ever I walk along them, they seem very quiet. If you want to find out how quiet any road is or whether it’s a cut through for the food delivery drivers on their noisy motorbikes, maybe you should visit a neighbourhood between about 7.00 — 9.00 pm which is when they seem to be about. I enjoy living in this part of Putney because of its proximity to the high street and public transport.  It is just so convenient.

yeah i agree it's dead quiet in all areas, just not convinced on the plane front. As you say I suspect they did it on a easterly wind day.

I live fairly close to that road and this part of Putney can be amazingly quiet.  Flight noise affect huge areas of London, but as you head up the hill in Putney it gets quieter.  They said in the article that they used the plane noise maps to get a shortlist of roads, then measured noise using instruments.  I do wonder if they measured when the Northern runway was in operation, or perhaps an easterly wind day.Road noise is a more constant issue and that area of Putney is a long way from the A3 and South Circular.  St Margaret's is a cull de sac and surrounding roads are not through routes due to Putney Park lane.  Traffic is heavier at school time due to the schools there, and parents in the area driving kids to school.  We get some passing noise (Drunks / kids / delivery scooters) as people come through the footpath from the Dover House estate by Granard School.To avoid noise of drunks get away from any regular walking routes from public transport to housing.

I would probably avoid the Heath side of West Putney now as it has become a total rat run here. I remember the days when even black cab drivers didn't know the area, now every car drives down Carslake and there are school bus pick ups on Genoa/Chartfield avenue.

I've lived in East and West and River roads too. Quietest was West Putney away from the High Street and back from Erpingham Rd and South of Lower Richmond Rd.My information is out of date though as we last moved about 15yrs ago. If you're worried about noise then install acoustic glass or triple glazing. Both work well.

Ashlone Road is a river road and so is Danemere if you count the fact it adjoins Ashlone. You can’t drive to the river but you can walk through the park. It used to be a through road. Only real traffic is by delivery behicles and residents. No through traffic. Even the connected roads don’t have much traffic as few people use the rat run along the embankment now. Technically you’re no longer allowed to access the area where the boathouses are. There are camera signs and there’s the risk a mobile camera will be there.

Have you tried roads in between Lacy Road and Felsham Rd, your still near the High Street and walk for shopping.

Thanks for the recommendation, I actually was under the impression the ‘river roads’ were the ones that connect directly down to the river. Would Bangalore  /Borneo/westhorpe street all be considered river roads?Airplane noise doesn’t bother us - if it did we wouldn’t be looking to stay in Putney. It’s more the drunk people at 3am on weekends, taxis collecting said people and beeping their horns at 1am when no one comes out to the taxi immediately. I’m just wondering if west Putney is quieter for this than East Putney or is there really no difference

Once we fully recover from the pandemic, the planes will be coming over at 5 am same as ever and will wake you up unless you have very good windows. It doesn't matter where in Putney you live.

Any of the river roads, especially the ones that don’t link to the river.
