Why is he allowing Divali to go ahead in Trafalgar Square, 4th November, which I totally agree with, but cancelling New Year fireworks on the Thames, using covid as an excuse?

'er; now just let me think about that !

That's a solid suggestion as a replacement... Only thing I can think of being an issue is the flight path and the aerial congestion shared with helo's already aloft and the taller buildings nearby.

What about drone light displays? Won't these replace fireworks?

Because he can't afford it nor would it go down well with his eco fanatics in the city as detonating the gunpowder needed for a 10-15 minute display in the middle of London whilst he's just expanded the ULEZ would be a bit hypocritical and frankly, I'm not worried about it's cancellation as it's all a bit shite anyway, being penned up with no booze for 5 hours on a night to celebrate.

Simon K. Dunno about tickets, for several years we got a great view from an Islington rooftop which avoided the crowds - unfortunately Bexit means our Islington friend found it more convenient to move back to the EU so that's no longer an option :-)

There's nothing to stop us all enjoying Diwali celebrations if we want to.https://londonist.com/london/things-to-do/diwali-in-london

Too old to be out past 10? What has my age got to do with watching fireworks?Gave no indication as to whether I approve or dislike fireworksJust a query as to why one was allowed and one notPlease read what I write and don't put your own rigid agenda on what you presumed I meant

I was under the impression that the tickets to view NYE fireworks cost £10, so probably washes own face.As for cancellation: why the bloody hell have I had 2 jabs (with a booster any time soon)?

Just read it Ivonne. Simon is an ignorant r'sole.
Sue Hammond ● 1569d
Simon,That is a very unkind comment to make.

It does seem a bit vague Michael.I agree Andy,I thought last NY was a complete waste of money.Although no published costs from what I can see. What was the point of having secret fireworks? Very exclusive for those only in the know. Some CGI would have done or just replay the year before.Of course now people will be expecting secret fireworks and probably head there anyway!

Hopefully nothing at all. Seens ridiculous spending £millions on a 15 minute display whilst at the same time pleading poverty at tfl.
Andy Pike ● 1569d
Simon, Ed. Yes, I'm sure you're right, that it's the uncertainty that means it's impossible to commit to the planning (and budgeting?) required for the a large fireworks display. It will be interesting to see what the alternatives are.

Simon the only information I found is below:"Due to the uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, our world-famous New Year’s Eve display will not be held on the banks of the Thames this year."Last year's successful show took place in a slightly different way due to the pandemic, and this year a number of exciting new options are being considered as part of our New Year’s Eve celebrations in London."Further details of this year’s celebration will be announced in due course."
Isn't it just that we won't know the R number on 31st December as we can't predict so far into the future. Diwali happening soon so can more confidently say safe to go ahead under current trends.

Perhaps it's to do with the cost of the NY fireworks? As a poor substitute a video I shot from a rooftop in Islington, 1st Jan 19 during that last display :-)https://flic.kr/p/2babfkA
Why do you care Barbara? Aren't you too old to be going out past 10pm anyway? Not as if your fireworks plans are ruined.
Perhaps they will have them in secret like last year!I didn't understand the logic last year I'm not going to even attempt it this year.
