Safer zebra crossing outside of Oasis Academy Putney

Please sign the petition below. One of son’s classmates, a 6yr old girl, got hit by a cyclist at the zebra crossing across from the Spencer Pub and Oasis Academy, (my sons and I have had 2 near misses with cars!).The little girl is ok but badly bruised and very anxious. Her parents has set up a petition to ask the council/MP to do something about making that crossing safer and more visible. I’d be grateful to you if you could sign the petition. A better mini-roundabout together with traffic lights to control the flow might improve safety at that junction - any thoughts?

The petition also mentions "2) Safety Barriers alongside the pavement" which I think is a good idea irrespective of it being a pelican or zebra. Although for some reason they seem more common on pelican crossings.

Sue  re ridiculous location for a school.  For the first time ever I have to disagree with you! If you go round to the back of the school there is a wooded area which runs the length of the school, virtually the length of Commondale Road  The children often go there and have lessons (  they are very polite to ordinary walkers who are there also, usually dog walkers As well, they make use of the common.It is a very well designed school although it has for lots of reasons met with disapproval  The crossing being one of them  I myself would never ever send a child of mine there as it has gender neutral toilets which I highly disapprove of  I could ,of course , start a new thread on that subject alone, but everyone to their own and it doesn't personally affect me

I am very sorry to hear what happened to the young girl and I have also crossed on that crossing only to find cyclists going up the inside of stopped cars where they simply cannot see pedestrians trying to get across the road. However, I don’t think a Pelican crossing will solve the problem as cyclists routinely ignore red signals, and personally I prefer a zebra which allows me to cross almost immediately instead of waiting for the lights to change.On a slightly different aspect, I have noticed many times that parents and children cycle across the zebra crossing. As cyclists, they are not protected by the law, as a zebra is for pedestrians only. Rule 79 of the Highway Code states that cyclists 'do not ride across a pelican, puffin or zebra crossing' and must 'dismount and wheel the cycle across'.I know that motorists will stop when they see a cyclist using a zebra crossing to get across the road, but they are under no legal obligation to do so.

Matt - some positive publicity would probably be a good thing - although I'm not sure about the strawberry outfit.Perhaps a giant thermometer for the lollipop stick :)

The petition calls for a proper pelican crossing and barriers - well why not? I find it surprising that a pedestrian crossing outside a school doesn't have these in the first place.  The closure of Hammersmith Bridge does of course make things worse and maybe Hammersmith and Fulham should contribute to the cost.The ideathat this is an unsuitable location for a school is risible ( and irrelevant) - so which primary schools in the borough are not near to busy roads? Hotham and Granard for example are no different.

I am sorry to hear the young girl was hit by a cyclist, it must have been very frightening for her. Did the cyclist bother to stop do you know? I am happy to sign the petition because I have always thought this was a ridiculous location for a school anyway, it is far too busy with traffic and the resulting pollution it causes must be very toxic.  Not a healthy atmosphere for children to be breathing in.
