Chelverton Road rat run

I find this somewhat disturbing. With increase of traffic using this road to cut off their right turn into PHS there is a markedly increased risk of children attending the nearby primary schools becoming involved in traffic accidents. If the reason this run is being so used is to do with the lights phasing then that has to be reversed a.s.a.p. before a child is seriously hurt.

Clifford, there doesn't seem to be a problem when the children come out of school with traffic. It's more first thing in the morning and weekends. I stood out the front having a laugh with the usual traffic warden this afternoon when the children were walking down the road after school and no jam.

The traffic lights have only ever let 2 vehicles out at a time over the last 15 years. I think the issue is that it is a box junction so if there is nowhere to go, you are stuck.

Barbara, I recall seeing something which resembled a traffic survey some while ago now on PHS which, if it was carried out with any degree of care should have highlighted the issues we are now experiencing. I begin to wonder the skill sets being brought to bear to revitalise the high street, but the children massing around where the Quill PH used to be do need some consideration as regards the increase of rat-run traffic.

Just spoken to a couple of bus drivers outside PBG they said the traffic light high street end only let's a couple of vehicles out at a time. Also they said they are so fed up sitting in traffic in the high street they just have to sit it out. Also the widened pavements don't help, or large lorries. They also new about Putney Hotel fire which stopped everything Saturday evening.

I'd say that Chelverton Rd is a minor road which links URR with Putney High St for anyone that wants to use it

What constitutes a rat run, as opposed to a 'route'?I'd say that Roehampton Lane is a main road linking the A3 to the A205 South Circular

I expect people are using it to avoid the gridlock outside putney Station. I have before on my motorbike because I can't even get past the Station on two wheels!Add school traffic displaced by the school street and people back to work but avoiding public transport, and Hammersmith Bridge effects.  Do residents want the lights changed to allow more cars through, and perpetuating the rat run? Or leave it as a traffic jam but fewer cars going through?  Or make it an ltn or school street?

Clifford, I live in Chelverton Rd, it has always been used as a rat run. But for some reason or other, in the last six weeks it has been dreadful. Always traffic jam early in the morning, weekends can't understand all the traffic using the road. Do not understand why they can't continue on the Upper Rich Rd, as there doesn't seem to be a major problem. But yesterday it was at a stand still at about 4pm when we came home from shopping, we told drivers to reverse back out of the road, which they did. But had been told the High Street end had been blocked off for some reason.
