PHS Gridlock

I’ve lived in Putney for 40 years and don’t remember the traffic ever being so bad on PHS.  It is just horrible again today. By the way the District Line is closed today, don’t know for how long.  We went there to get the tube, but East Putney station shut, so then walked down to catch a 22 bus from Putney Bridge.  After 15 minutes wait, we gave up and went home.  We went via Chelverton Rd which was full of traffic.

Local elections for LBW in May 2022, think many Conservatives will not be voting, Thamesfield has 3 Con councillors... We want results from them to get our votes so they better sort... PHS in disaster or we will have Residents Association candidates standing against them... problem includes massive invasion of deliveroo motorbikes everywhere, and escooters on over widened pavements

What a nerve, Ivonne, saying why don’t you move! It seems, so far, we are all in agreement that the traffic has suddenly worsened.  I tend to agree with Alexander’s comment about the pavement widening and buses. The traffic was never as bad before, when we had the old narrower pavements.  But I don’t know, I hope the problem can be solved or Putney is going to be a very unattractive and unpleasant place to live.

I agree, you cannot sell your house because nobody wants to come here.Traffic has been exacerbated by TfL's timing of the traffic lights (this practice started about 6 years ago by the way and getting worse).  TfL have recently agreed that they have changed the timing of traffic lights, again!!!!...).I think they should get a life, the Council should discuss this with TfL (though no bright people there either) and consider ways in which to disperse / reduce or whatever the traffic that comes from the A3 (I think park and ride would be a good idea).  It all lands on Putney Hill/Putney High Street or on West Hill.  Then it is worse due to suspect roadworks on New Kings Road and works on Wandsworth Bridge do not help; let us not forget Hammersmith Bridge being closed).The world has a problem with global warming, I will not disagree and we must do something about this (planting more trees would help enormously!).At the moment, it feels that the whole blame of the global warming and the mess on our roads is fairly and squarely on the residents in Putney!Also, with the policy of walking and cycling, people have forgotten that not everybody is able to do so.So, I am afraid, for me at least, my future is to be locked up in my own home and not allowed to go anywhere!We had a meeting with Council members on Friday morning about speeding on our road.  A chap from the Council said why do you not move away?  No words.....

Funny, you should say that Maxine!  I have loved every moment of living in SW15, but it has crossed my mind how much I can take of the traffic situation.  Can’t see me ever leaving,  but who is going to want to move here?

I wondered if the horrible traffic jams are going to become a permanent thing or does anyone think traffic flow will improve?

Yes, we came home just after 4pm we just got into Chelverton Road, but realized the road had a traffic jam. We had to park a bit a way from the house and walk the shopping home. Most cars started to reverse back out of the road, a motorbike who was going the wrong way down the road told us the High Street end had been blocked. Anybody know why?. When we went out earlier, I have never seen so many people coming out of the Main Line Station, obviously football fans and the Fox was packed.  So don't know if something had happened since.

I cycled over Putney Bridge.Traffic turning right into The King's Road seemed to be blocking the bridge. The bridge only has one car lane going north.Buses are too big and spending too much time at stops. The dinosaurs buses as I call them were brought in when I was a kid. Since then they're got even bigger. With card readers there is no excuse not to have multiple doors just like the buses at airports.And why block Putney Bridge with bus stops? There is nothing on the bridge. Poor design and planning probably by people that would never travel by bus!

Having been caught up in the PHS tangle this am (Saturday) it was obvious to me that the combination of footpath widening and multi-bus transit in the narrower area is the cause. I sat behind three double-deckers trying to park and then proceed, and thus blocking smooth movement of cars, motorbikes and even bikes. Whoever thought out the configuration on the southern side of the bridge has done us all a huge disservice.
