Heavy traffic on Putney and Air Pollution of Surrounding Area

I wonder how good the air is in residential roads off Putney Hill? Does anyone know. If it's bad are residents finding it affects their health?The traffic is so bad at weekends and rush hour that cars and buses are static for long periods with their enginesstill running.

Perhaps it is worth flagging this up with the car club company?Surely it in all our interests that this facility is working?  I wonder how many cars that should have this facility working don't.  The instruction manuals are absolutely huge and it can be difficult to find the answers because of not knowing or being able to find the right words to search the index.https://www.autoweek.com/news/technology/a1817821/what-auto-stop-start-autoweek-explains/

I've noticed it a few times - seems an odd thing to do. I'm normally puzzling my head to work out how tune to Radio 4 ... Must admit I do not like electronic handbrakes or those stupid dials for selecting drive, park, reverse, etc in Ford Focus automatics - why change things that work and everyone's familiar with when there's no benefit?

That's the interesting thing Matt.  Why would you disable it?  I happen to know someone (not me) who has done this - I don't think deliberately - but doesn't know how to turn it back on.  Just thinking about it now makes me wonder whether there are online versions of car instructions which are more easily searchable?

Modern cars now have 'auto hold' Philippa where you dont need to worry about the clutch on a hill start any more. The car just holds itself in position and then releases the brake once you pull away

I drive a zipcar about once a month and have to turn it back on as its normally been disabled by one of the previous users.

Matt, all the Zipcars I've driven over the past ten years or so have had that feature. (Thought I'd stalled the first time it did it! It's jolly useful if one dfoes stall, because you just ram the clutch down and the engine restarts.)

Can't say I like hill starts though!  So maybe more people need to learn how their more modern cars work?

Its an offence to be stationary with your engine running though, isn't it - and has been for years?

There has also be no planning or provision for the large influx of deliveroo motorbikes, they are parking on pavement outside old Trespass site now, too many on Tesco express Bay, take residents parking  on Montserrat Rd, and both  Copenhagen crossings of Montserrat and and Felsham, Token Yard opposite Macdonalds.. They are everywhere, and break all traffic rules...

Unpalatable as it is - if you are stuck in the traffic - then you have to admit that you are a part of that traffic!You are sure to feel better if you are proactive and plan ahead  and check out the planned closures on the tubes/trains and if expecting visitors warn them to take other routes, share buses and lifts, have meetings on Zoom etc, cycle or reorganise for a better time.I've put the TfL website address on another (Martine's) thread where you can look up what closures are planned on the tubes/train.

There was some sort of fire last night at the Putney hotel which caused the URR to be blocked off. So no left turn if coming down Putney hill and all traffic coming from east Putney side of URR had to either go up or down the hill. Total chaos

Its got a whole lot worse. Urgent practical action is needed to reduce car numbers to the route leading from the A3 and those other routes passing through Putney to go over Putney Bridge

No problem, Ronald. Is the traffic on Putney Hill being caused by the roadworks at the first bus stop on Putney Hill?  Do you think it is temporary or do you think the traffic jam has got a whole lot worse?  It really is the worst I have known.

Mike I have to agree, trying to get into the right lane traveling at 20mph on Putney Hill is a nightmare. The 30 mph limit should start after the Green Man. It makes no sense and is not being followed apart from me apparently when I rarely drive!

Indeed perhaps our councillors could call for a review of the pavement widening/ road narrowing scheme of last year and perhaps revert it or adjust it to enable cars to overtake stationary buses more easily.How often do council bright ideas turn out to have negative unintended consequences - one would hope for better but sadly rarely the experience,The LTN idea was horrendous (luckily reversed in Wandsworth though massively supported in this forum I believe) and the 20mph scheme whilst fine for residential streets is overkill and I assume largely ignored on Putney hill, lower Richmond road etc as inappropriate to those settings.
